Alea Research said Variational traded $17.39 billion between Sept. 21 and Sept. 25, ranking second among 98 venues in onchain perpetuals, behind only Hyperliquid. After that run, the platform published VAR token terms: point holders will receive 32% of supply, fully unlocked on launch day.

The note said the five-day total through Sept. 25 was up 66.9% from the comparable period a week earlier and exceeded every full trading week on record for the platform. Starting on Sept. 21, Variational’s daily volume moved past Aster, Lighter, and edgeX, then hit a $4.02 billion peak on Sept. 23, one day before the token terms were disclosed.
Token terms published on Sept. 24
Variational released the token terms at 01:13 UTC on Sept. 24. VAR is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter. Point holders are set to receive 32% of supply, fully unlocked on day one. Another 18% is reserved for the Variational Foundation, while 50% is allocated to team and investors, locked for 12 months after launch and then released over at least three years.

Alea said two changes stood out versus the Sept. 10 page. First, the buyback mechanism shifted from a discretionary share of fee revenue to 100% of treasury revenue. The Sept. 10 page had stated that the old ratio was determined by the foundation and could be changed or stopped at any time. Second, weekly points were originally supposed to end at the close of the third quarter, but now continue until launch day.
Variational linked that delay to what it called a 「major strategic partnership that redefines Variational’s growth trajectory」. It also listed priorities ahead, including a public mainnet, more swap products, a trading API, and buyback details. Later the same day, its seventh swap product, the Taiwan Index, went live.
Market share rose to second place behind Hyperliquid
From Sept. 21 to Sept. 25, Variational accounted for 14.95% of all onchain perpetual trading volume, good for second place among 98 venues. Hyperliquid held 34.46%. Aster, Lighter, and edgeX posted 9.18%, 6.49%, and 6.15%, respectively. Alea noted that all three ranked ahead of Variational in August, when Variational was sixth at 5.36%. For September to date, it ranked third at 8.94%.

The report said new records came one after another. Since Aug. 25, daily volume set fresh highs five times, the first new highs since Jan. 20. On Sept. 23, daily volume reached $4.02 billion. The $17.39 billion result for that week topped the previous best full-week mark of $12.63 billion. September had already surpassed January’s $44.94 billion, making it the biggest month on record with five days still left in the month.
Open interest, measured as the value of open positions counted once, closed at $1 billion on Sept. 25. That was the first settlement day above the $1 billion line for the platform.
Swap products made up more than half of daily volume
In the 24 hours through 21:58 UTC on Sept. 25, seven swap products accounted for 56.6% of platform volume. Those swaps track equity indexes, metals, or crude oil, settle funding once each day at the close of traditional markets, and draw liquidity from traditional institutions.

Equity indexes alone made up 43.5% of daily flow, more than all cryptocurrency markets combined, and the Nasdaq 100 swap was the largest single market on the platform. Alea cited a Sept. 18 statement from Variational’s CEO saying traditional-market products were approaching 70% of daily volume.
Execution metrics put the Nasdaq 100 swap ahead of BTC on spread
According to the report, only 20 of the platform’s 553 markets could quote at the $1 million size, yet those 20 markets handled 94.1% of that day’s volume. At that scale, spread determines the cost of large orders.
At a $1 million quote size, the Nasdaq 100 swap showed a spread of 0.68 basis points, compared with 4.71 bps for BTC and 6.82 bps for ETH. Alea wrote that swap traders can now enter positions above $5 million with an 「all-in execution cost below 1 basis point」, and Omni charges no trading fee on top of that.

32% for point holders and a fast market repricing
Alea described 32% as a large allocation to release on day one. For comparison, Hyperliquid released 31% at genesis, edgeX released 30%, and Aster released 8.8% of supply at launch from a larger pool. The insider share at Variational is larger than at Hyperliquid: team and investors hold 50%, matching the ratio disclosed by Lighter, while Hyperliquid contributors held 23.8% with no investor allocation alongside them.
On Polymarket, the market repriced the terms within hours, though the middle band did not move. The probability that VAR would be worth more than $1 billion one day after launch was 65.5% before the terms were announced and still 65.5% at the Sept. 25 close, up from 33.5% on Aug. 1. Tail probabilities shifted instead: the chance of a valuation above $2 billion rose from 29.3% to 34.85%, while the chance of a valuation above $500 million fell from 91.5% to 84.5% by the close.
Using a market median valuation of $1.51 billion, each point was worth $52.81 as of Sept. 25, calculated as 32% of that valuation divided by 9.15 million issued points. Another 150,000 points are added each Friday against the same 32% allocation, implying 1.6% dilution in point value. If launch comes on Dec. 31, the published schedule leaves 13 more weekly distributions, taking total points to 11.10 million. At the same median valuation, each point would then be worth $43.53.

Treasury flows and the buyback plan
Omni charges no trading fees. Its in-house market maker, Omni Liquidity Provider, earns the spread. The treasury receives 20% of that spread, though Variational said the ratio 「may change」. The company reported that $914,194 flowed into the treasury over the two weeks through Sept. 18, and the treasury contract held $9.06 million on Sept. 25. On the same date, USDC balances disclosed for its Arbitrum addresses showed $22.66 million in the Core OLP treasury and $9.06 million in the protocol treasury.
The report said disclosed revenue sits within the range implied by the platform’s own quotes. Variational reported $4.57 million in gross spread over two weeks, which annualizes to about $119 million at the same pace. That falls between the $65.4 million and $380.7 million range implied by Sept. 25 quotes. Twenty percent of that range equals $13.1 million to $76.1 million annually, and all of it is now committed to buying back and burning VAR.
The bear case: points continue until launch
Alea also laid out the counterargument. Overall onchain perpetual volume fell 8.1% across the same weekdays in the prior week, while Variational rose 66.9%, right when the points program had originally been set to end. Swap trading began earning double points on Sept. 3, and a swap trading competition ran from Sept. 10 to Sept. 24. Week 41 point distributions covered 30,358 accounts, versus a range of 24,501 to 25,967 over the prior 12 weeks.

Turnover, measured as daily trading volume per dollar of open interest, rose from 2.43x to 3.76x. The note said points now continue until launch, so part of the record activity is tied to that incentive structure.
Upcoming milestones
- Oct. 2 at 00:00 UTC: Week 42 distributes 150,000 points, with weekly Friday distributions continuing until launch.
- Before launch: Variational said it will publish the split between team and investors, a public mainnet, a trading API, and buyback details.
- Q4: VAR launches, and weekly point distributions end no later than Dec. 31.
- 12 months after launch: the lockup for team and investors ends, and their 50% allocation begins vesting over at least three years.
Alea closed by saying Variational set records while its terms still said points would end in September. It then gave traders a reason to stay: 32% of tokens unlocked on day one, a point value near $53 at market pricing, and every treasury dollar directed toward VAR buybacks. At the same time, the report argued that not all of the performance can be reduced to incentives, pointing to the 0.68 basis-point $1 million quote on the Nasdaq 100 swap, open interest above $1 billion, and a platform that grew 66.9% while the broader market shrank.
