Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has ignited the most acute identity crisis in the Layer-2 ecosystem by openly questioning whether Ethereum still needs a dedicated rollup roadmap. Within days, leading L2 teams have collectively reversed their core narrative — from forcefully claiming 'we are Ethereum' to bluntly stating 'we are not Ethereum.' The trigger was Buterin’s social media musing: as the base layer becomes faster and cheaper, do dedicated L2s remain necessary for scaling? The remark immediately put Offchain Labs co-founder Steven Goldfeder on the defensive. Earlier in March 2024, Goldfeder had declared on X that 'Arbitrum is Ethereum.' After Buterin’s post, he wrote a stark correction: 'Arbitrum is not Ethereum. It's a core part of the ecosystem, a close-knit ally, but it is not Ethereum.' The whiplash was palpable.

From Symbiosis to Independence: L2 Teams Rebrand

Yet this collective pivot is not mere crisis management. Multiple L2 leaders offered a more nuanced take to CoinDesk: Ethereum’s progress is forcing rollups to grow up and clarify their independent value.

Ben Fisch, CEO of Espresso Systems, said Buterin’s point aligns with the logical evolution of Ethereum’s scaling strategy. 'He's saying the whole purpose of L2s was to scale Ethereum. Well, now we're making Ethereum faster, so they become less relevant.' But Fisch rejected obsolescence. Instead, he sees the start of L2 flourishing: 'L2s can use Ethereum as a service, but they are by no means beholden to it.'

Jesse Pollak, head of Coinbase’s Base — which holds roughly $4 billion in total value locked — welcomed base-layer improvements but stressed L2s must go beyond low fees. 'Going forward, L2s can’t just be ‘Ethereum but cheaper,’” he said, signaling that differentiation, not cheapness, will define winners.

Polygon Bets on Payments, Optimism Sees Websites

Polygon CEO Marc Boiron argued that Buterin’s real message was about raising expectations, not abandoning rollups. 'Scaling alone is insufficient. The real challenge is building unique blockspace for real-world use cases like payments, where cost, reliability, and consistency matter.' Polygon has recently pivoted its strategy to focus primarily on payments.

Optimism Foundation co-founder Jing Wang offered a vivid analogy: 'L2s are websites. Every company will have its own, tailored to its needs. Ethereum is an open settlement standard.' This reframes the relationship: Ethereum provides the bedrock, L2s customize the experience — no longer a parent-child model but a platform-app ecosystem.

For the L2 industry, this moment may be the most consequential turning point. For years, rollups rode Ethereum’s scaling narrative to explosive growth, collectively securing billions of dollars.
