YouTube has launched a feature allowing users to set a zero-minute daily limit on Shorts, effectively hiding the short video feed. Originally for teens, the feature now extends to all accounts, signaling proactive regulatory compliance.

YouTube has rolled out a new setting that lets users set a daily zero-minute limit on Shorts recommendations, effectively removing the Shorts tab and all short-form video suggestions from the home screen. Subscriptions and long-form content remain unaffected. Originally introduced in January 2026 as a parental control for teens, the option is now available to all user accounts globally.

How It Works: Three Steps to Block Shorts

To activate, users navigate to YouTube app → profile icon → Settings → Time Management → Shorts feed limit, then select 0 minutes. The Shorts tab disappears immediately. To restore, simply adjust the limit back to any preferred duration. Some regions may still see a 15-minute minimum option as the rollout continues.

Industry’s First 'Real' Off Switch

YouTube product management VP Jennifer Flannery O’Connor called this feature an industry first. Unlike existing screen time tools that merely remind or prompt users to “watch 15 more minutes,” the zero-minute limit completely hides the Shorts feed — no workaround possible. The feature was initially designed for parents managing 13- to 17-year-olds’ screen time via Family Link, with adjustable limits from 0 to 120 minutes. YouTube’s example: set 0 minutes for homework, 60 minutes for long car rides. It later expanded to adult accounts without parental mediation. Custom bedtime reminders and break reminders were also added.

Why YouTube Would Voluntarily Kill Its Own Traffic

YouTube Shorts boasts over 2 billion monthly active users, making it a critical growth engine against TikTok. Offering a full off switch seems counterintuitive for ad revenue. However, industry observers see it as a preemptive move against mounting regulatory pressure. Since 2023, the US, EU, and Australia have pursued legislation targeting social media’s harm to minors. By offering the strictest possible restriction, YouTube aims to reduce the risk of forced regulation. Additionally, the move reflects YouTube’s product strategy: short videos drive reach, while long-form content retains users and generates higher-value ad inventory. Letting users actively choose long-form only may improve ad quality.

Impact on Creators: Fewer Views, Higher Engagement

For creators relying on Shorts, including many crypto and finance KOLs, the impact is mixed. On one hand, organic reach may drop as more users set zero-minute limits. On the other, remaining Shorts viewers are more intentional and likely to engage more deeply, potentially improving click-through and retention rates.
