THORChain faces scrutiny after refusing to block Binance hack flows as RUNE drops 17.7%

THORChain is under renewed pressure after the more than $6 billion Binance theft pushed the cross-chain protocol back into the center of a laundering debate that has followed it through past crypto hacks. The FBI said the attack was carried out by TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group tied to Lazarus Group and also linked in the report to the roughly $1.5 billion Bybit theft in February 2025. U.S. authorities then urged THORChain node operators, RPC providers, instant swap services, DeFi platforms and blockchain analytics firms to block transactions involving hundreds of listed ETH, BTC and SOL addresses. THORChain did not comply, saying its protocol is neutral and permissionless. Co-founder Chad Barraford said investigators do not need subpoenas to access the information THORNode operators can see, while co-founder JP Thor argued THORChain nodes should not be expected to censor transactions if Ethereum and Bitcoin nodes are not held to the same standard. Then an Ethereum chain reorganization on Oct. 31 triggered an abnormal double refund on a 10 ETH deposit, forcing an emergency halt across much of THORChain’s cross-chain swap functionality. That pause also stopped North Korean hackers from continuing to move funds through the protocol. THORChain later said the user returned the extra 10 ETH and the treasury is solvent again. CoinGecko data shows RUNE fell about 17.7% over the past 24 hours, as attention shifted from fee-driven activity to regulatory and security risk.

Samsung plans to exit 8-inch foundry business by 2030 and shift focus to 12-inch advanced nodes

Samsung Electronics plans to fully exit its 8-inch wafer foundry business by 2030 and redirect its strategic focus to 12-inch advanced process technologies, according to a report by South Korean tech media outlet TheElec. The company is expected to gradually scale down its 8-inch production lines as part of that transition. The first major step will be the closure of the S7 plant in the Giheung complex in the second half of 2026. That facility has monthly capacity of about 50,000 wafers. After the S7 shutdown, Samsung’s total monthly 8-inch wafer capacity is expected to fall from 250,000 wafers to below 200,000. The report also said utilization rates at Samsung’s remaining S6 and S8 plants had dropped to around 70% at that point. Samsung foundry head Han Jin-man previously said the 8-inch foundry market had become increasingly crowded and price-driven, and that the company planned to gradually reduce its exposure to the segment.

Liquid247 flags a roughly $9.49 million ETH perpetual sell wall on Binance at $2,290

Order book data tracked by Liquid247.xyz showed a notable concentration of sell interest in Binance ETH perpetuals at the $2,290.00 level. The platform recorded about 4,145.81 ETH in sell orders at that price, with a notional value of roughly $9.4939 million. The order sat around 0.07% above the mid-price at the time, which was about $2,288.40. Liquid247 also showed that, in Binance’s near-touch order book, aggregate sell-side liquidity stood at about $66.5068 million, compared with roughly $50.2669 million on the buy side. That left sell orders ahead by around $16.2399 million, accounting for 13.91% of total depth. The figures point to heavier sell-side liquidity than buy-side liquidity in the nearby ETH perpetual market on the exchange at the time of the snapshot.

TSMC steps up CoPoS push as AUO and Innolux reportedly move on glass substrate pilot lines

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is accelerating its CoPoS panel-level packaging plans while expanding its physical footprint through panel-factory acquisitions. The company said last week it would buy AUO’s Central Taiwan Science Park plant and related facilities for NT$38.8 billion, following its 2024 purchase of an Innolux plant in Tainan for NT$17.14 billion. Together, the two deals bring TSMC’s spending on panel-factory assets to NT$55.94 billion. The report says AUO is planning pilot lines for through-glass vias, redistribution layers and glass core substrates, using Corning glass and a 510×515 mm format. Innolux is also said to be working on the same track, with supply-chain sources claiming Nvidia is testing glass core substrates and may use Innolux for front-end TGV processing. Innolux’s 620×670 mm panel size was described as the largest in the industry. The technology push is tied to rising AI GPU and high-performance computing demand, which is driving larger package sizes. TSMC has described CoPoS as its next-generation panel-level packaging route, while chairman C.C. Wei has said customers still prefer CoWoS at this stage. The report also notes that yield and customer qualification remain the main hurdles before glass substrates can move into large-scale commercialization.
