Threshold halts tBTC minting and redemptions after critical Linux kernel flaw disclosure

Threshold Network suspended tBTC minting and redemptions on Oct. 31 in response to CVE-2026-98432, a critical Linux kernel vulnerability recently disclosed by Red Hat. The move temporarily blocks the normal two-way conversion process between BTC and tBTC, a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed cross-chain asset used across Ethereum-based DeFi applications such as lending and liquidity mining. In a follow-up statement on Nov. 2, Threshold said tBTC remains fully backed and that no loss of funds has been detected. The team reported that wallets tied to the bridge hold about 4,320 BTC, worth more than $330 million, against roughly 4,185 tBTC in circulation, leaving an excess reserve of about 135 BTC. Threshold also said it has found no unauthorized minting or transfer activity. The incident has already affected DeFi integrations. Aave paused new tBTC deposits and borrowing, and its interface showed about $137 million in total tBTC reserves frozen. Threshold described its action as precautionary rather than a response to a confirmed compromise, adding that node operators have either patched their servers or taken nodes offline while waiting for fixed kernel versions. As of publication, Threshold had not provided a timeline for restoring minting and redemption.

FBI says North Korea was behind Binance’s $6.3 billion crypto theft as stolen funds move through ETH, DeFi and bridges

The FBI has formally attributed Binance’s roughly $6.3 billion crypto theft to North Korea and labeled the activity TraderTraitor, while stopping short of publishing a full evidentiary record. The agency said the attackers are primarily converting stolen assets into ETH and are expected to keep laundering funds through DeFi services and instant swap platforms. That public attribution came after blockchain investigators including Chainalysis, TRM Labs and Elliptic had already outlined on-chain links, operational patterns and fund flows tied to the case. Their findings show a laundering process that goes well beyond simple token sales. According to the firms cited, the attackers sold more than 130 tokens on EVM chains, used Aave to post USDT as collateral and borrow ETH, and moved funds through deposit receipt tokens and cross-chain routes to reduce the impact of stablecoin freezes. Chainalysis also described repeated transaction patterns that suggest automated fund distribution. At the same time, some of the stolen assets have been frozen or otherwise removed from the attackers’ reach. Elliptic said it had verified about $2.85 billion in frozen or controlled assets, while Newton Foundation said around $3.5 million worth of tokens were permanently locked after being sent to the NEWT token contract. Binance said it has replenished about 95% of affected assets and restored withdrawals for part of its networks and listed assets.

BTCPay urges users to shut down servers after reports of drained wallets

BTCPay, the open-source bitcoin payments project, told users to switch off their servers after reports that wallets had been drained. The team said it is still investigating the issue and has not disclosed any loss figure. It also has not announced a fix. According to the project’s founder, the reports seen so far appear to involve versions older than 2.4.2. The notice points to a possible version-specific problem, but the investigation is still ongoing and no broader conclusion has been released.

Bitcoin edges back toward $79,000 as traders look past crypto’s biggest hack

Bitcoin moved back toward $79,000 as markets appeared to absorb the shock from what was described as crypto’s biggest hack. Among major digital assets, ZEC led the group. Oil prices also moved lower after a report said Donald Trump wants to give diplomacy with Iran more time. U.S. midterm elections are scheduled for Tuesday. The price action pointed to a broader risk reset across markets, with crypto and commodities both reacting to the latest political and macro headlines. While the source material offered only a brief snapshot, it highlighted three clear developments at once: bitcoin’s rebound toward the $79,000 level, relative strength in ZEC versus other major tokens, and weaker oil following the Iran-related report tied to Trump. Traders are also watching Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections.
