Abstract to shut down on Dec. 15, 2026 after Igloo spent tens of millions without finding product-market fit

Abstract, the Ethereum Layer 2 network tied to Pudgy Penguins, will shut down on Dec. 15, 2026, according to an announcement released on Oct. 7. Users have been told to bridge assets out before that date through the project’s migration tools, or risk losing access to funds left on the network. On the same day, Pudgy Penguins founder Luca Netz said Abstract had been funded by parent company Igloo for the past 18 months and had burned through tens of millions of dollars over two years without reaching product-market fit. He said resources will now be redirected to Pudgy Penguins, Pudgy NFT and PENGU, and added that the team rejected launching a token or conducting an ICO despite already losing an eight-figure sum. The shutdown follows a steep decline in on-chain activity and DeFi usage. DefiLlama data cited in the report showed Abstract’s total value locked had fallen to about $9.6 million on Oct. 6 from a peak of $57 million, while daily revenue was about $2,646. The report also pointed to weak ecosystem depth, shrinking DEX volume, staff departures in August, and a token strategy that left PENGU’s main liquidity on Solana rather than on Abstract itself.

Abstract to shut down mainnet on Dec. 15 as Igloo ends support for the Ethereum L2

Igloo Inc., the parent company of Pudgy Penguins, said its Ethereum layer-2 network Abstract will wind down and shut its mainnet on Dec. 15, after which any assets left on the chain will become inaccessible. The decision came less than a week after Blast announced its own shutdown, but the case for Abstract looks different: the network had users, wallets, apps and brand partnerships, yet still failed to sustain itself. According to the report, Abstract recorded more than 400,000 users, 4 million wallets, 144 deployed applications and 325 million transactions, alongside partnerships involving Red Bull Racing and Disney. Even so, Igloo CEO Luca Netz said the company had funded the project for 18 months and lost "tens of millions" of dollars. He added that Igloo could have launched an Abstract token or even pursued an ICO to extend the runway, but chose not to issue a token it did not believe had real demand. The report argues that Abstract exposed a structural problem in the L2 market: user counts and wallet creation do not automatically translate into fee revenue. With thin on-chain liquidity, limited institutional participation and a user base tilted toward collectors and casual brand participants rather than heavy DeFi traders, the network could not generate enough activity to cover operating costs. Users with funds still on Abstract have until Dec. 15 to migrate assets to Ethereum through the Migration Hub or the native bridge.

Abstract to shut down in phases, sets Dec. 15, 2026 deadline for asset withdrawals

Ethereum Layer 2 network Abstract said it will wind down operations and stop running on Dec. 15, 2026, warning that funds not bridged out by that date will become inaccessible. Users can move assets through the project’s official migration hub or its native bridge. In its statement, Abstract said a standalone chain focused on consumer crypto had become difficult to sustain, citing limited DeFi activity and thin onchain liquidity as factors behind stalled growth. The network was launched by the Pudgy Penguins team and had previously attracted more than 400,000 users, with over 144 applications deployed. The team also warned users to watch out for fake migration websites as the shutdown process begins.

Igloo-backed Abstract to shut down by Dec. 15, 2026 after failing to find product-market fit

Abstract, the consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 network built by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., said it will wind down after failing to build a sustainable business around its "consumer crypto" strategy. The project launched its mainnet in January 2025 and aimed to bring mainstream users onchain by reducing the complexity often associated with blockchain products and by leaning into entertainment-oriented adoption. Igloo CEO Luca Netz said the company had funded Abstract for the past 18 months and lost tens of millions of dollars over two years while trying to build consumer products, assemble what he described as an all-star team, bring in some of the world’s biggest brands and grow a community in the millions. Even so, he said, the company still did not find product-market fit. Abstract and Netz both pointed to limited institutional crossover, thin liquidity and a constrained decentralized finance ecosystem as barriers to growth. The network said more than 144 apps had launched on Abstract, more than 400,000 users had joined, and partnerships had been signed with brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney. Users have until Dec. 15, 2026 to bridge assets off the network through Migration Hub or Native Bridge.

Ethereum L2 Abstract to wind down operations, sets Dec. 15, 2026 asset migration deadline

Ethereum layer-2 network Abstract said it will gradually cease operations after nearly three years of running the network, with a full shutdown scheduled for Dec. 15, 2026. The team warned that users who do not bridge assets out of the chain before that deadline will no longer be able to access those funds once the network is closed. For now, users holding assets on Abstract can withdraw through the project’s official Migration Hub or its Native Bridge, which carries an approximately three-hour delay. Abstract also said its engineering and ecosystem teams will help projects in the network move to other chains. On the reason for the shutdown, the team said major industry changes have made the operating model of an independent blockchain focused only on Consumer Crypto difficult to sustain. It cited a constrained DeFi ecosystem, weak on-chain liquidity, low institutional participation, and a smaller budget than competitors, saying those factors left the network’s growth stalled and led to the decision to end operations after internal review.

Abstract to shut down Abstract Chain on Dec. 15, 2026, urges users to move assets before deadline

Ethereum layer-2 network Abstract said it will wind down Abstract Chain after nearly three years of operation, with onchain services scheduled to stop on Dec. 15, 2026. Users have been told to move assets to other chains before that date through the Migration Hub or the native bridge, which the team said may take about three hours to complete. Abstract warned that assets left unmigrated after the deadline will no longer be accessible. In its statement, the project said the ecosystem had posted strong growth over the past 18 months. It said Portal became a product discovery and distribution layer onchain, while Abstract Global Wallet, or AGW, grew into one of the more widely adopted smart contract wallets in crypto. The team added that more than 144 applications had been deployed on the network, with global brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney participating, helping bring in more than 400,000 users. Abstract said the decision followed a reassessment of its single-chain strategy focused on consumer crypto. According to the team, growth was constrained by a limited DeFi ecosystem, insufficient onchain liquidity, limited institutional participation and a smaller budget than rivals. It said the past 12 months were spent searching for a new product-market fit, but maintaining a chain that was operationally unsustainable and lacked scalable growth was no longer the best use of resources.

Igloo to Shut Down Abstract on Dec. 15, Leaving Roughly $48 Million to Exit

Igloo Inc., the parent company behind Pudgy Penguins, said it will shut down Abstract, its Ethereum layer 2 network, on Dec. 15. The team warned on X that users who do not bridge assets out before that date will lose access to their funds. Based on L2BEAT data cited in the report, the chain held roughly $48 million in assets shortly before the shutdown announcement. CEO Luca Netz said Igloo began building a consumer-focused blockchain after acquiring Frame in the summer of 2024, with the goal of applying Pudgy Penguins’ mass-market strategy to onchain products. Abstract said it had reached more than 400,000 users through tie-ins with Red Bull Racing and Disney and processed over 325 million transactions. The company said growth had stalled as Abstract struggled with a limited DeFi lineup, thin liquidity, weak institutional traction, and a smaller budget than rivals. Netz added that Igloo had funded the chain for the past 18 months and lost tens of millions of dollars over two years. He said the company chose not to launch a token or run an ICO. Going forward, Igloo said its focus will return fully to Pudgy Penguins, its NFT business, and the PENGU token.

Igloo Shuts Down Abstract and Redirects Resources to Pudgy Penguins and PENGU

Igloo, Inc., the NFT and IP company behind Pudgy Penguins, said it will shut down Abstract, its consumer-focused crypto blockchain, and reallocate staff and resources to Pudgy Penguins, Pudgy NFTs, and the PENGU token. The company said Abstract was built to serve consumer use cases and required investment in engineering, ecosystem talent, and infrastructure. Its growth, however, was constrained by the high cost of operating an independent blockchain, limited liquidity, a weak DeFi ecosystem, and declining market interest. Over the past two years, Igloo said it lost tens of millions of dollars while keeping Abstract running, expanding it, and trying to find product-market fit and a path to monetization. The company added that even better-capitalized firms have struggled to find product-market fit for their own blockchains, making the decision to shut down Abstract the appropriate one. Going forward, Igloo said it will refine a brand path that runs from products and content to PENGU and then to Pudgy Penguins NFTs, with its focus returning to the character IP.
