UBS and Nine Swiss Institutions Launch Franc-Pegged Stablecoin CHFD Sandbox Test

UBS has launched a sandbox test for a Swiss franc-pegged stablecoin, CHFD, in partnership with nine Swiss institutions. The stablecoin, pegged 1:1 to the franc, has been live in the sandbox since June. The test explores automated interbank transactions, tokenized settlement, and programmable payments, with use cases including fraud reduction, fair ticket access, and efficient fund disbursement. The sandbox runs until end of 2026, and UBS emphasizes it does not imply a formal launch decision. This initiative brings together major Swiss financial players to evaluate blockchain-based stablecoin applications.

Africa Finance Corporation issues CHF 350 million digital bond on SIX SDX

Africa Finance Corporation has issued a CHF 350 million digital bond, worth about $431 million, through SDX, the digital exchange platform of SIX Swiss Exchange, according to Ledger Insights. The deal marks the first time an African institution has issued a digital bond through a central securities depository and an exchange, giving the transaction added significance beyond its size alone. The bond carries a five-year term and a 1.4925% coupon. By size, it ranks among the larger digital bond offerings completed on the SDX platform, though it remains below the CHF 375 million bond issued by UBS in 2022. The transaction was arranged by Commerzbank AG, which acted as technology lead, together with Deutsche Bank. The issuance adds another example of established financial institutions using regulated market infrastructure for digital securities issuance.

Bybit sues North Korea and Lazarus Group in U.S. court over $1.5 billion crypto theft

Crypto exchange Bybit has filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the North Korean government, the Reconnaissance General Bureau, and the Lazarus Group over the theft of about $1.5 billion in digital assets in February 2025. The complaint, recently unsealed, seeks roughly $1.5 billion in compensatory damages under the U.S. Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, along with treble punitive damages. The case stands out because it is described as the first time a crypto exchange has used the U.S. federal court system to pursue civil recovery directly against a sovereign state and state-backed hackers. The court has already issued a preliminary injunction freezing related wallets and platform funds. Bybit said it has recovered about $48.4 million so far, while more than $30.5 million has been frozen by 28 exchanges and custodians worldwide. Even so, tracing the stolen funds remains difficult: 90.2% of the assets are now hard to track after moving through mixers, cross-chain bridges, and OTC channels, while only 9.8% can still be traced to specific wallet addresses. At the same time, Bybit is facing regulatory pressure in several jurisdictions, including Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, the United States, China, and Hong Kong.

BIS pilot settles about $1 million in tokenized cross-border payments with 28 banks

The Bank for International Settlements has completed a pilot under Project Agorá that used tokenized money to process about $1 million in real transactions, with settlement taking roughly 80 seconds on average. The test brought together five central banks and 28 major commercial banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Citi, UBS, Deutsche Bank and Standard Chartered. It covered six currencies — USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF and KRW — and examined how tokenized central bank reserves and tokenized commercial bank deposits could be used in corporate payments, interbank transfers and foreign-exchange transactions. According to BIS, the prototype was not directly integrated with banks’ existing payment systems, yet the transactions still settled in around 80 seconds on average. The project used a shared ledger so participating banks could see ownership and payment status on the same distributed record, reducing the layers typically involved in correspondent banking. The pilot also tested near-simultaneous FX settlement to reduce settlement and counterparty risk. BIS said the project does not create a new form of payment money; instead, it places existing bank money on blockchain-based infrastructure to improve cross-border payment efficiency.

China’s cross-border brokerage crackdown revives the case for tokenized equities

A TechFlowPost opinion piece argues that China’s tightening campaign against cross-border U.S. stock brokerage services has turned access to asset allocation into a broader question of financial stratification. The article says that after June 12, 2026, mainland Chinese users of Futu and UP Fintech’s Tiger Brokers could still hold, sell, and withdraw positions, but could no longer add funds or increase exposure. It links that shift to a wider policy framework in which Chinese regulators, led by a joint plan from eight agencies including the China Securities Regulatory Commission, seek to shut down illegal cross-border securities, futures, and fund activity within two years, while banning new account openings and inbound capital immediately. The piece traces a regulatory timeline from talks with Futu and Tiger in November 2021, to the companies being labeled illegal operators in December 2022, app removals in May 2023, and formal probes plus the new joint cleanup in May 2026. It also cites fines of RMB 1.85 billion and RMB 410 million, premarket share-price drops of 45% and 30%, Hong Kong’s roughly HK$285 billion in IPO proceeds in 2025, and the rising weight of information technology in China’s CSI 300. Against that backdrop, the author argues that tokenized stocks and other on-chain real-world assets may become a new distribution layer for global productive assets, especially for investors who are locked out of traditional brokerage channels.
