U.S. stocks edge higher as Coinbase and Strategy lead gains in crypto-related names
Major U.S. stock indexes closed slightly higher, extending their gains for August. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.22% on the day and is up 0.54% for the month. The S&P 500 added 0.21%, bringing its August gain to 1.41%, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.16% and is now up 1.61% for the month. Precious metals names posted much stronger moves. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) gained 3.83% and iShares Silver Trust (SLV) rose 4.47%. Among mining stocks and related funds, Newmont (NEM) advanced 7.86%, Barrick Gold (GOLD) rose 8.94%, VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) gained 9.40%, First Majestic Silver (AG) climbed 12.72%, and Coeur Mining (CDE) jumped 13.05%. Crypto-linked stocks were mixed. Bit Brother (BTBT), Cipher Mining (CIFR), and CleanSpark (CLSK) closed lower, while Hut 8 (HUT), Riot Platforms (RIOT), MARA Holdings (MARA), Coinbase (COIN), Circle (CRCL), Bitmine (BMNR), and Strategy (MSTR) finished in positive territory. Strategy led the group with a 12.68% gain, followed by Bitmine at 10.61%, Circle at 9.56%, and Coinbase at 9.55%.
