Bryan Johnson said in an X post on July 22 that he had “cloned” himself “as a newborn,” adding that “baby-bryan” now lives in a petri dish and could be used to test therapies, grow organs for transplantation, develop new treatments, and supply “young cells.” The claim spread quickly and drew backlash, but the more important issue raised by scientists was that Johnson was not describing human cloning in the Dolly-the-sheep sense. According to the account cited in the source report, he was referring to induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs, a method that reprograms blood cells with four transcription factors — Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and cMyc — into a stem-cell-like state. That process does not require an egg and does not create an embryo. The dish, critics said, contains reprogrammed cells, not a newborn. The report also notes that Johnson disclosed no operating institution, no technical documentation, no third-party verification, and no peer-reviewed record. While iPSCs are already used in disease models and drug screening, growing fully transplantable organs remains one of the hardest unresolved problems in regenerative medicine.
