Vitalik’s Lean Ethereum plan lays out a multi-year overhaul for the network’s next phase
Vitalik Buterin has published a long-range roadmap called Lean Ethereum, framing it as the network’s third major era after the Merge. The plan is not a single fork. It is a three- to four-year sequence of protocol changes that touches nearly every core layer of Ethereum, from verification and cryptography to finality, execution, privacy, and state storage. The roadmap, posted on X on July 5, 2026, builds on a public draft at strawmap.org first introduced by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake in February. It sketches seven upgrades through 2029 and sets out five long-term targets: faster L1 finality, 1 gigagas of L1 throughput, teragas-scale L2 capacity, quantum-safe cryptography, and native privacy transfers on L1. The proposal would shift Ethereum away from full transaction re-execution by every node and toward recursive STARK-based proofs, while also introducing a new storage structure that caps dynamic state at 2 TB and adds a separate layer that could scale to 100 TB. Vitalik also raised the possibility of replacing the EVM with RISC-V or leanISA, a move that has already drawn attention from L2 developers such as Offchain Labs, which has backed WASM. For ETH, the roadmap points to a long-term capacity story rather than an immediate repricing event. Its effect on value capture still depends on whether more L1 demand, fee revenue, and token burn actually follow.
