Tsinghua PhD and award winner Yuxian Gu joins DeepSeek to work on LLM efficiency

DeepSeek has added another high-profile researcher as it continues hiring across algorithm, engineering, product, operations, data engineering, and support functions. Public information indicates that Yuxian Gu, a 2021 PhD student at Tsinghua University and recipient of the 2025 Graduate Special Scholarship, has formally joined the company. His name had already appeared on the author list of the DeepSeek V4 paper, while the official release of DeepSeek V4 is scheduled for mid-month. Gu’s research focuses on improving efficiency across the full lifecycle of large language models, including pre-training, downstream adaptation, and inference. His recent work spans three main areas: pre-training data selection, knowledge distillation, and efficient model architecture design. Representative projects include PDS, Instruction Pre-training, Learning Law, MiniLLM, MiniPLM, and Jet-Nemotron. According to the source material, Gu has accumulated nearly 5,000 citations on Google Scholar and has published as first author at major AI conferences such as NeurIPS, ICLR, and ACL. The report also says methods from his research, including MiniLLM, have been adopted by organizations and open-source communities associated with Google, Alibaba, and Nvidia. His addition could strengthen DeepSeek’s capabilities in model compression, efficient inference, and architecture optimization as competition around frontier AI models intensifies.
