UK crime agency freezes $13.5 million during Sorare probe tied to former Premier League sponsorship

The UK’s National Crime Agency has frozen 10 million pounds, or about $13.5 million, as part of an investigation into online sports platform Sorare, according to a report Monday by The Sun. The freeze followed a January 2025 order from Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The report said Sorare is being investigated over allegations of unlicensed gambling. The company, known for blockchain-based digital trading cards, signed a four-year, $162 million partnership with the Premier League in 2023. That agreement ended at the close of last season. A spokesperson quoted in the report said the court order was designed to prevent the dissipation of funds while the NCA examines possible links between the money and alleged third-party criminality. The development comes as UK regulators keep a close watch on sports sponsorships involving crypto firms. In June, the Financial Conduct Authority said it had written to Premier League clubs about questionable sponsorship arrangements with companies not authorized to operate in the country, including crypto-related businesses. Some clubs still have crypto sponsors for the coming season, including Circle with Chelsea and OKX with Manchester City.

UK NCA Freezes $13.6M in Premier League Account Linked to Sorare Deal

The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) has frozen more than $13.6 million in a Barclays account belonging to The Football Association Premier League Limited, the operating entity of the Premier League. According to Decrypt, the NCA obtained an order from Westminster Magistrates' Court in January 2025 under the Proceeds of Crime Act to freeze the funds. The money is the first payment under a four-year sponsorship deal between Sorare and the Premier League. That agreement, announced in January 2023, allowed Sorare to issue digital player cards for players at all 20 Premier League clubs. The partnership ended after the 2025-26 season. In a separate case, Sorare faces prosecution by the UK Gambling Commission, which alleges the company offered gambling facilities without an operating licence. Sorare has entered three not-guilty pleas, and the trial is listed for June 2027. The company says its game rewards skill rather than chance and denies that its product constitutes gambling under UK law.

US Crypto Holders Estimated at 67 Million, California Leads With 9.5 Million

A new interactive map from the National Cryptocurrency Association (NCA), a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to cryptocurrency education, estimates that roughly 67 million Americans hold cryptocurrency. The map covers all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and all 435 congressional districts within the 119th Congress. At the state level, California takes the top spot with an estimated 9.5 million holders. Texas follows with 5.94 million, Florida with 4.71 million, New York with 4.66 million, and Illinois with 2.64 million. NCA says the numbers are generated through a modeling exercise and should not be treated as verified counts. In a separate analysis commissioned by NCA, Pragmatic Policy Group found that the crypto industry supports 231,800 jobs in the United States, contributes $55.4 billion in economic activity, and accounts for $30.8 billion in labor income. Direct crypto-related employment stands at roughly 34,000 jobs. The data suggest that crypto activity has a measurable footprint in the U.S. economy and labor market. The findings were reported by Bitcoin.com News.
