Why a founder stepped back from Web3 payments after six months in the field

Yuki Liu, writing for Stablehunter/Money in Motion and published by MarsBit, laid out why she decided to stop pursuing a Web3 payments startup after spending the past six months inside the sector. Her account is not framed as a failed venture, but as a change in judgment after field research and direct product work. During that period, she visited Yiwu, Shuibei, Putian and Mexico, examined use cases often cited in industry reports, built a Web3 payment MVP, handled accounts and worked on crypto-based collection tools. Her central argument is that payments is not a business where a better product alone wins. In her view, the real determinants are banking relationships, licensing structure, capital efficiency, compliance execution and long-cycle risk control. She also argues that many payment paths that appear profitable are actually collecting risk premium rather than demonstrating durable operating strength. Liu remains constructive on payments as a long-term opportunity. She says the larger opening still exists, particularly in enterprise settlement, treasury and back-office fund management rather than in consumer-facing wallet adoption. But she concludes that the resources required to compete in payments do not fit her team’s current capabilities, leading her to step away from building in the category while continuing to study how capital moves and where it settles on-chain.
