Solana’s first binding on-chain governance vote passes two proposals, while burn-focused fee reform falls short

Solana completed its first binding on-chain governance vote on Aug. 27-28, 2026, shifting from informal validator signaling to stake-weighted voting under the new Solana Governance Proposal, or SGP, framework. The vote put institutions, public companies, staking operators, and token holders into the same formal process for the first time. Of the three measures on the ballot, SGP-0001, the network’s constitution, passed comfortably, and SGP-0002, a proposal to double the annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30%, cleared the line by the narrowest of margins at exactly 67.00%. SGP-0003, a fee redesign that would have raised SOL burn by introducing a resource-based fee component, failed despite meeting quorum, as 27.18% abstentions weighed on the supermajority calculation. The result exposed divisions across the Solana ecosystem, including among listed treasury companies. The Solana Company publicly opposed both economic proposals, while DeFi Development Corp supported them. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko backed the general direction of the failed fee proposal but said the package likely tried to do too much at once and should be split into simpler pieces in a future vote.

WuBlockchain August tech report: BIP-110 stalls, Glamsterdam goes public, Solana moves toward 350ms

WuBlockchain’s August technology report tracked a broad set of blockchain infrastructure updates across Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, major Layer 2 networks, and several other ecosystems. The report said Bitcoin’s long-debated BIP-110 entered real activation in August but failed to gain support, with miner signaling at only about 2.5% during the mandatory signaling phase. Nodes enforcing the rule began rejecting non-signaling blocks from height 961,632, effectively creating a minority chain that produced only around two blocks before largely stalling, while the main Bitcoin network continued as normal. On Ethereum, the Glamsterdam upgrade moved from internal DevNet testing into a public test phase, with DevNet 8/Platåberget launched on Aug. 13 and the Gloas fork activated on Aug. 20. Testing has shifted from basic functionality to edge cases and client compatibility, while tentative testnet activation targets of Sept. 28 for Sepolia and Oct. 26 for Hoodi have been proposed. Hegotá also advanced from open proposal intake into a narrower candidate-selection stage. The report also highlighted rising performance competition across scaling networks. OP Mainnet upgraded from 250ms Flashblocks to 200ms Subblocks, Base outlined a 200ms Native Blocks plan, and Solana is preparing to reduce mainnet slot time to 350ms starting from epoch 1020. In parallel, Arbitrum said real mainnet blocks can now be proven with SP1-generated ZK proofs, extending its path toward a multi-proving architecture.

Crypto token buybacks hit a record $638 million, with nearly 90% coming from Hyperliquid and Pump.fun

Crypto projects have spent a record $638 million on token buybacks in 2026 through Aug. 31, according to figures cited in the report, but the headline number is heavily concentrated. Roughly 90% of that total came from just two platforms: perpetuals exchange Hyperliquid and memecoin launchpad Pump.fun. The data points to a real shift in tokenomics, with projects trying to tie token value to operating revenue instead of ongoing issuance, yet the underlying cash flows still come largely from trading activity. The report also argues that buybacks alone do not guarantee shrinking supply. Tokenomist’s figures show that once new unlocks are included, only BNB and RAY are in net deflation among 27 tracked tokens. HYPE’s annualized supply is still rising about 47%, while PUMP is up 14% and KAITO is close to 100%. Elsewhere, Ethena’s proposal to direct 95% of protocol net revenue to ENA buybacks passed with 17.6 million votes in favor and zero against, though it will not activate unless USDe supply returns to $7.5 billion from the current $4.12 billion. Solana’s first on-chain governance vote also highlighted the same math problem: slower issuance and higher burns do not necessarily produce net supply contraction.

Bitcoin's 25% August Rally: The Strongest August Since 2017, but $81,000 Is the Real Battlefield

Bitcoin rallied about 25% in August, its strongest August since 2017, driven by the Treasury's expanded buyback, Washington's crypto policy push, and a record $1.4 billion short squeeze. The $81,000-$82,000 zone is the key resistance separating a trend reversal from a bear market rally. September's focus: the $76,000-$78,000 support, continued ETF inflows, and the long-end yield. Analysts view any pullback as a potential late-cycle buying opportunity.

Crypto and tech roundup: Binance margin delistings, Strategy BTC buy, Solana fees hit record

A heavy news cycle from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 brought fresh movement across exchanges, crypto treasuries, regulation, tokenization, AI products and on-chain markets. Binance said it will remove 12 cross and isolated margin pairs on Sept. 3 after suspending borrowing on some isolated pairs on Sept. 1, with auto-liquidation, order cancellation and delisting to follow. Strategy disclosed it bought 4,603 BTC for $369.7 million, while BitMine reported another week of ETH accumulation and later bought 51,000 more ETH from FalconX and BitGo. In Europe, the European Commission designated ChatGPT as a very large online search engine and classified Reddit and Roblox as very large online platforms under the Digital Services Act, triggering stricter compliance obligations. Elsewhere, ICE said it is working with tZERO on tokenized securities infrastructure, Telegram began rolling out Gram Wallet to a subset of users ahead of a wider launch to more than 1 billion users, and Solana posted record fee and governance participation data. The period also included large wallet transfers, SEC policy moves, Hyperliquid’s reported U.S. market discussions, AI-related fundraising and product launches, and a series of macro comments spanning bonds, gold and rate expectations.

Solana fee revenue climbs as SGP-0002 deflation proposal clears vote

Solana’s fee revenue denominated in SOL reached a seven-day average of nearly 9,200 SOL on Aug. 27, up more than 80% from three months earlier, according to ChainCatcher. Non-vote transactions also hit a fresh seven-day high of 191 million, compared with 88 million a year ago, while daily Jito validator tips averaged 2,073 SOL over the past week, up 26% week over week. At the same time, the SGP-0002 “double deflation” proposal passed last Friday with just over 67% support, above the 66.67% threshold. Voter participation reached 60.7% across 1,326 validators, setting a record for on-chain governance participation on Solana. The proposal doubles the annual deflation rate from 15% to 30% and is expected to remove about 18.9 million SOL from planned issuance over six years. That would cut the amount of new SOL entering the market each year and reduce validator income for the same amount of work. Staking rewards are projected to fall from about 5.25% to 2.25% in the third year, putting pressure on validators that rely more on inflation income than transaction fees.

Solana Validators Barely Pass Proposal to Double SOL Disinflation Rate

Solana validators approved SGP-0002, known as Double Disinflation, in the network’s first system-wide governance vote, but only by a razor-thin margin. The measure closed Friday with 67% support, just above the 66.667% threshold, with participation reaching 60.7% of eligible stake across 1,326 validators. Roughly 25% voted against and 7.84% abstained. The proposal raises Solana’s annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30% while keeping the long-term inflation target at 1.5%. That would bring the network to its inflation floor in about 2.8 years instead of 5.7 years, moving the timeline up to early 2029 from 2032. Unchained reported that projected issuance would fall by about 18.9 million SOL over six years. The vote remained below the required majority until late shifts from major stakeholders, including Kraken and Galaxy, pushed it over the line. Kraken first moved against the proposal, then shifted roughly 8.1 million SOL back to yes. Galaxy also moved from near-total abstention to majority support. The governance approval does not make the change live immediately. Its implementation proposal, SIMD-0550, still needs to be shipped by client teams and activated on-chain.
