Roland, a music equipment manufacturer, has entered the AI music space with the launch of Melody Flip, a generative AI tool. The tool operates as a DAW plugin, offering approximately 250 genre-specific music kits. Users can generate melodies, chord progressions, bass lines, or drum patterns from scratch, or input a reference track for the tool to create variations. Unlike Suno or Udio, Melody Flip focuses on providing raw music material rather than producing complete songs with vocals and full arrangements.

Writers, illustrators and independent musicians are pushing a widening set of lawsuits against Google, Meta and Anthropic over how AI systems were trained, with disputes spanning copyright infringement, allegedly unauthorized use of platform data and the scope of user agreements. The legal picture remains mixed. Anthropic reached a $1.5 billion settlement with authors in a case approved on July 20, 2026 by San Francisco federal judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín, covering roughly 500,000 works at about $3,000 apiece, and agreed to destroy pirated ebook files. But the same litigation also left room for AI companies, after judge William Alsup found that training on lawfully purchased and scanned second-hand books under the so-called "Panama Project" qualified as fair use. Other cases are still moving through court. Artists have continued their long-running suit against Stability, Midjourney, DeviantArt and Runway AI; musician Sam Kogon is challenging Google over YouTube Content ID data allegedly used to train Lyria and ProducerAI; and claims against Meta over Llama were narrowed after a judge found insufficient evidence of market harm, while piracy-related allegations survived. New suits filed this year by music publishers, book publishers and authors show the fight is still growing.

AI music startup Suno has raised $400 million at a $5.4 billion valuation and reached a settlement and licensing deal with Warner Music. The company is testing new products that will let users create with Warner-owned music assets.

Sony Music’s copyright case against Suno is entering a summary judgment hearing in federal court, putting the legality of training AI on copyrighted recordings before a judge for the first time.

AI music platform Suno is facing a fresh wave of scrutiny after a newly indexed data breach revealed more than 55.3 million unique email addresses and tens of thousands of Stripe payment records. The breach, which Suno said stemmed from a November 2025 security incident, was added to Have I Been Pwned on July 20, according to founder Troy Hunt. If users signed up with phone numbers, those were included as well, and Hunt said 24% of the leaked emails had already appeared in the service’s existing breach database. The bigger problem for Suno may be the source code leaked alongside the user data. Code dated from 2023 to 2024 reportedly listed training data sources and volumes tied to YouTube Music, Deezer, Genius, Pond5, Jamendo, Freesound, IMSLP and podcasts collected via RSS. 404 Media said the materials add up to more than 380,000 hours of audio and lyrics, including over 2 million YouTube Music clips. Those details track closely with the claims made in copyright lawsuits brought by Sony Music, UMG and Warner in 2024, though Warner later settled and entered a licensing partnership with Suno. Sony and UMG are still pressing their case.
