X rolls out Chat Agents, bringing AI agents into end-to-end encrypted direct messages

X has launched X Chat Agents, a new developer feature that lets businesses run AI-powered agents inside X’s end-to-end encrypted direct messages and group chats. Announced on Aug. 27 by Chris Park, head of the X developer platform, the feature was introduced with a 40-second demo showing a coffee shop account taking orders, confirming items, and replying with preparation times without leaving the existing chat thread. The system is built on the X Chat API and Chat XDK that X made public on July 30. According to the official description cited in the source material, developers can build bots that send and receive encrypted and signed messages across one-to-one chats and group conversations, with support for encrypted text and media, typing indicators, and read receipts. Chat XDK handles encryption, decryption, and signing on the user device side, and supports Python, TypeScript, Rust, Go, C#, and Java. At the same time, X’s own documentation says the platform cannot read message plaintext, while merchants must decrypt messages on their own backend if they want their agents to function. The report also notes current rate limits of 25 messages per 15 minutes and 500 per 24 hours, while pricing after the temporary free period has not been disclosed.

Nikita Bier steps down from X product lead role, leaving Smart Cashtags and Android rebuild behind

Nikita Bier said he is no longer running product at X, but will stay on as an adviser. In his farewell post, he said the last roughly 400 days included a rebuild of the timeline, Android app, onboarding, notifications and chat, along with nearly 30 new product launches. Those changes included a Grok-powered custom timeline, XChat upgrades, an account transparency feature called About This Account, and Smart Cashtags for crypto and financial posts. Bier also said X’s new users and engagement are setting records, with App Store rank up 70 places from a year earlier. X has not named a direct successor. Bier pointed to Benji Taylor, Singhai and Jonah Katz as the people continuing the work. The move keeps him inside X, just no longer in charge of the product roadmap he helped shape.
