Tether blacklists 9 addresses tied to CoinDCX incident, freezes 2.21 million USDT

Tether has blacklisted nine addresses linked to the CoinDCX security incident and frozen 2,212,850.3 USDT, according to monitoring by Salus. The inquiry began after investigator Darcy identified an unusual transfer of about 15.99 million USDT. CoinDCX co-founder Sumit Gupta initially said no security breach had occurred. Salus later challenged that account by pointing to transfers involving proof-of-reserves addresses and a TRX distribution pattern. Salus said those on-chain findings prompted responses from the parties involved and gave Tether verifiable blockchain evidence to take action. The development centers on address blacklisting and fund freezing tied to the CoinDCX case.

France’s AMF flags 25 unauthorized crypto websites, blacklist grows by 64 this year

France’s financial markets regulator, the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), said on Oct. 19 that it had identified 25 additional websites in the third quarter that were illegally offering crypto assets or crypto-asset services in France. The newly listed sites include alphaairobot.com, aureoncorevix.net, bitgrokapp.com, bitkelttrade.com, cryptobullbear.com, and investpathline.com. According to the AMF, the blacklist has expanded by a total of 64 names since the start of 2026. The regulator said the list is updated frequently, but it is not exhaustive because new unauthorized or fraudulent entities continue to appear. The AMF said the public can review the full blacklist through the section 「Espace Épargnants > Protéger son épargne > Listes noires et mises en garde」 on its website, as well as on the ABEIS website. It also said users can check the whitelist of authorized crypto-asset service providers, or PSCA, on the AMF website to verify whether an entity is permitted to operate in France.

X account says USDT contract includes blacklist burn function that can zero balances

ChainCatcher reported that X account @blockchainchick said Tether’s USDT contract has included a function called destroyBlackFunds since its 2017 deployment on Ethereum. According to the post, the function first checks whether an address has been blacklisted, then reads the balance, sets that balance to zero, deducts the same amount from total supply, and emits an event, with no function available to reverse the action. The account also said the blacklist-related function labels the target address as _evilUser, and that only Tether’s owner multisig can call it on Ethereum and Tron. It further claimed that Tether can later mint the same amount of USDT to a selected address, leaving net supply unchanged. The post cited a U.S. Department of Justice forfeiture case in Massachusetts in March 2025 that described this process and involved about $9.016612 million in USDT. The same account also said USDC can restrict wallets but cannot destroy balances, and argued that this mechanism exists on both Tron and Ethereum while Bitcoin does not have an owner.

Tether blacklists four THORChain treasury addresses on TRON, freezing about 1.45 million USDT

Tether has apparently blacklisted THORChain’s USDT treasury addresses on TRON, according to a post on X from THORChain technical co-founder Chad Barraford. He called the move unprecedented for the industry and said it raises questions for DeFi protocols about the security of the asset. Barraford added that the team does not know why Tether made the decision and had received no prior communication before the action was taken. The Defiant reported that the four blacklisted treasury addresses held about 1.45 million USDT in total. Following the blacklist action, THORChain has paused trading and liquidity provider operations on TRON. Activity on other chains has not been affected, based on the information available so far. Barraford said the team is now trying to contact Tether and hopes the move was the result of an error or misunderstanding.

Firelight to reverse blacklist process and restore affected Flare wallets

Firelight, an onchain protection protocol, said some deposit addresses failed its funds screening process, leading the protocol to unstake the affected funds and return them to their original addresses. The move involved 87 addresses and a total of 117,500 FXRP. According to Firelight, its current compliance mechanism screens for blacklisted or OFAC-sanctioned addresses both when funds are deployed and throughout the full cycle. If an address is flagged at deployment or during the cycle, the funds remain in the protocol until the cycle ends, earn no rewards, but can still take part in the protection module for the rest of that cycle. Once the cycle ends, the funds are returned and the related wallets are blocked from reconnecting. Firelight said this approach is not sustainable and that it will reverse the blacklist process and unfreeze the affected wallets in the coming days, with the timing and steps for fund retrieval to be announced separately. The protocol added that its security, KYC, and institutional standards will remain unchanged, while a new user-friendly framework will be drafted over the coming weeks after community consultation. Flare co-founder Hugo Philion said 84 Flare addresses were unstaked under the compliance policy and that he will personally provide matching compensation to those that are not sanctioned and not broadly blacklisted.
