Morgan Stanley Urges Investors to Rotate From Semiconductors to Hyperscalers, Flags Memory as a Peak Risk

Morgan Stanley chief U.S. equity strategist Michael Wilson has told clients it may be time to reduce semiconductor exposure and rotate into hyperscalers, arguing that the move does not signal the end of the AI cycle but rather a new phase within it. In his latest weekly note, Wilson said semiconductor stocks have cooled after a historic rally since late March, with memory and chip names posting their steepest two-day drop since the pandemic. He argued that this could be the fourth meaningful reset since ChatGPT’s launch in November 2022. Wilson drew a comparison between semiconductors and silver, saying both have seen parabolic moves and share commodity-like characteristics, with memory standing out as the most vulnerable semiconductor subsector. He also pointed to Meta’s decision to sell excess computing capacity to external customers as a key catalyst, saying it may indicate hyperscaler capex growth is approaching an interim turning point. Morgan Stanley now prefers hyperscalers because of their resilient core businesses, underappreciated positioning in the agentic application layer, and overlooked cost-cutting leverage. Beyond cloud, Wilson also highlighted consumer discretionary, regional banks, transports, and biotech as beneficiaries of a broader market expansion, supported by falling oil prices, more stable rate expectations, and a less hawkish macro backdrop.
