Ahead of Wednesday's Champions League game against Liverpool, Archie Brown spoke about his career path, Kadikoy's atmosphere and his suspension after the Galatasaray derby.

Archie Brown spoke before Fenerbahce's Champions League game against Liverpool on Wednesday about his career path, the atmosphere in Kadikoy and his suspension after the post-match brawl against Galatasaray. Brown also scored Fenerbahce's first Champions League goal in 18 years in their draw against Roma this season.

From English academies to Turkey

Brown was born in Birmingham. He started his youth career at West Brom before joining Derby, where he helped the club to its only youth top-flight title.

In 2021, Brown joined Lausanne Sport in Switzerland at the age of 19 because he was frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities. He joined Gent in 2023 before moving to Fenerbahce in a £7m deal in 2025.

Brown said: "I've had quite an unorthodox journey to get here. I won't say that was always the plan."

Brown said: "I'd seen so many talented players stay on the fringes of the first-team, playing with the U21s and then by 22, 23, they have no real first-team experience."

Brown said: "And they have to go down into the lower leagues or non-league to try and build their career up from there. I didn't want to fall victim to that."

Brown said: "Secondly, I felt it was important to get out of my environment, to learn a new language, experience a new culture, to help me grow up and mature as a person."

Kadikoy atmosphere

Brown said: "There are not really any comparisons in English football. There are no stadiums that can replicate the atmosphere."

Brown said: "Sometimes it can be difficult trying to communicate with your team-mates because it's so loud and that's especially when the other team have the ball."

Brown said: "The only thing I can say to people in England is to come watch a game if you have a chance because it's really special. There are no boring nights in Kadikoy."

Brown said: "I love it."

Brown said: "You play football to play nights like this against players like these, so I'm excited for the challenge."

Red card and suspension

Brown was sent off for his role in a post-match brawl against Galatasaray on Monday. Galatasaray accused Brown of physically attacking captain Abdulkerim Bardakci.

Brown was given a three-match ban, and Bardacki was banned for two games. Brown said it was his first red card.

Brown said: "It was a unique one."

Brown said: "I always try to show my passion on the pitch and those derbies are fiery so anything can happen and unfortunately it came out in that way. But that's not my character."

Brown said: "Everyone who's seen a Fenerbahce against Galatasaray match knows how intense it is. It's not abnormal for Turkish football, but it's definitely a lesson I have to take."

Brown said: "Ultimately I'm disappointed because I've got suspended and the most important thing I can do is to be there for my team-mates. It was my first red card and hopefully my last."

Role and international ambition

Brown said he played centre-back in the Galatasaray game. He has represented England at youth level and continues to dream of playing for the senior side.

Brown said: "In the Galatasaray game I played centre-back but in Champions League games, I might be higher up and pop up in different positions."

Brown said: "The good thing about how we play is it gives me a lot of freedom, and I've had a lot of trust from the coaching staff to give the game whatever I feel like it needs."

Brown said: "I like to play free and try to put smiles on the fans' faces."

Match background

Dirk Kuyt is now interim Fenerbahce boss. BBC Sport described Fenerbahce as sixth and nine points adrift of leaders Galatasaray after 10 games. BBC Sport said Liverpool are managed by Andoni Iraola.
