Manchester United came from 2-0 down to beat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday 4 November, ending a nine-game winless streak. Bruno Fernandes scored a re-taken penalty and Matheus Cunha struck twice late on to complete the comeback.
How the game turned
Fernandes scored from the spot after his initial penalty miss was ordered to be retaken because a Roma player had encroached into the area. The penalty had been awarded after Cunha was fouled.
Cunha equalised seven minutes from time after capitalising on a Roma error, then scored the winning goal.
Cunha sent off
Cunha was booked for his celebration and then sent off in injury time after a second yellow card for a clumsy lunging tackle.
Fernandes on his benching and the response
Fernandes said: "The manager took a decision of making myself be on the bench because I wasn’t performing, and that’s fair."
Fernandes said: "Everyone felt that was a punishment for the words that I had said. And if it was, it was right. The manager is the one that makes the decisions. I have to accept them. I have to go forward with that."
Fernandes said: "It doesn’t change the belief I have on the manager and on the staff and and every player that is in this club, and it doesn’t change my aim to win every f***ing game that I have ahead of me."
Fernandes said: "We needed a bit of a kick."
Fernandes said: "We were a bit reactionary. When we lost the ball, we weren't reacting as quickly as we could have and the boss really drilled it into us that we need to be more active and take the game ourselves."
Rooney's verdict and next match
Wayne Rooney said: "Bruno Fernandes has shown a bit of passion in defending himself on what he thought was right, but more importantly we have seen that passion and fight on the pitch because the first half was terrible."
Wayne Rooney said: "The first half had none of what we saw in the second half."
Wayne Rooney said: "No passion, no tackling, no getting to the ball, no aggression, and the complete opposite of the second half."
Wayne Rooney said: "And when that happens in the second half, you see the crowd get behind the team and you felt like they were going to win the game."
Manchester United play Aston Villa on Sunday.
