halving

How is there a finite amount of bitcoin? The protocol sets a 21 million cap, fixed issuance rules, and halving events that slow new supply over time.

Not all bitcoins are truly owned or available. Some are unmined, some are held, and some are likely lost and no longer spendable.

All bitcoins will not be mined anytime soon. Issuance keeps slowing after each halving, so the final stretch takes far longer than many expect.

When all bitcoins are issued, the network does not stop. Blocks still get mined, but miner revenue shifts from block subsidies to transaction fees.

If all bitcoins are bought, the network does not stop. The main effects are tighter supply, harder trading, and higher scam risk.

If all bitcoins are bought, trading does not end. The real effect is tighter supply, harder execution, wider spreads, and higher scam risk.

Bitcoin is often cited as one of the best-performing assets ever, but the answer depends on time frame, volatility, and how performance is measured.

A bitcoin blunder for the ages usually comes from custody, transfers, or risk mistakes—not from Bitcoin itself.
