Anthropic has added AGENTS.md support to Claude Code in version 2.1.277, addressing a compatibility issue that had drawn public criticism from Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke in late August. Under the update, Claude Code will automatically read AGENTS.md when a project does not include a CLAUDE.md file. Users can also change the setting in /config so the tool reads both files.
AGENTS.md is described as a shared project rules file used across multiple coding tools, and it was already supported by Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and GitHub Copilot. The lack of support in Claude Code had created extra maintenance work for teams using several agents at once. Shopify, for example, uses Claude Code alongside Codex and other tools, which meant its engineers previously had to maintain two separate rule files.
BlockBeats said Anthropic has now built AGENTS.md support into Claude Code as a native Mod and released the source code publicly. The report added that developers will also be able to modify how project instructions are loaded based on that Mod.

Issue had been raised publicly by Shopify
AGENTS.md is a shared project rules file used across tools. Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and GitHub Copilot had already supported it. According to BlockBeats, this was the issue Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke called out publicly in late August.
Shopify uses multiple agents, including Claude Code and Codex. Because Claude Code previously recognized only CLAUDE.md, the team had to maintain two separate sets of rules. In large codebases, if one layer was not kept in sync, different tools could end up reading different instructions.
Anthropic ships the feature as a built-in Mod
Tobi said at the time that Shopify was even considering disabling Claude Code. Claude Code engineer Thariq Shihipar had responded then that Anthropic stuck with CLAUDE.md because different models were better suited to different prompts, Skills, and project instruction formats.
Less than a month later, Anthropic has turned AGENTS.md support into a built-in Mod for Claude Code and released the source code publicly. The report said developers will also be able to use that Mod to customize how project instructions are loaded.
