Withdrawal Anomaly and Liquidity Concerns
Crypto exchange AscendEX (formerly Bitmax) is experiencing a severe withdrawal anomaly. Multiple users report that withdrawal requests remain stuck in 'Initiating' status for hours without any corresponding on-chain transaction hash. Such behavior typically indicates insufficient available funds—i.e., a liquidity crunch.
Past Security Breach and Transparency Shortfalls
In 2021, AscendEX suffered a $78 million hack attributed to the North Korean Lazarus group. While the platform reimbursed affected users at that time, it has since failed to publish Proof of Reserves (PoR) reports or undergo third-party audits, leaving its solvency unverifiable.
The Broader Struggle for Mid-Sized Exchanges
This event is not isolated. Facing stricter regulations (e.g., MiCA, US enforcement) and a user migration towards giants like Binance and Coinbase, mid-sized exchanges are squeezed by falling user numbers, dwindling liquidity, and rising compliance costs. Without strong trust signals, such platforms are particularly vulnerable to bank runs during market stress.
