Event: Withdrawal Anomalies and Liquidity Concerns
Crypto exchange AscendEX (formerly Bitmax) has recently been exposed to massive withdrawal anomalies. Numerous users reported that their withdrawal requests remained in an 'Initiating' state for extended periods, failing to be processed, with no corresponding on-chain transaction hash generated. Industry analysts point out that such phenomena are often linked to severe liquidity shortages, suggesting that AscendEX may have entered a state of liquidity depletion.
Notably, this is not the first time AscendEX has faced a major crisis. In 2021, the platform was hit by a hack attributed to the North Korean Lazarus Group, resulting in a loss of $78 million. Although the platform later compensated some users, it has long lacked a public Proof of Reserves and independent third-party audits, resulting in persistently low transparency.
Background: The Survival Struggle of Small and Mid-Sized Exchanges
This incident is not isolated. Against the backdrop of tightening regulation and the growing dominance of top-tier exchanges, small and mid-sized crypto exchanges are grappling with high customer acquisition costs, heavy compliance burdens, and liquidity management challenges. User demands for proof of reserves and transparency are rising, yet many smaller platforms struggle to meet industry standards. The AscendEX situation may serve as a microcosm of the ongoing industry consolidation.
