Withdrawal Anomaly Exposes Liquidity Concerns
On June 26, crypto exchange AscendEX (formerly Bitmax) reported widespread withdrawal issues. Users noted that after submitting withdrawal requests, funds remained stuck in 'Initiating' status without an on-chain hash, indicating the platform may not have actually processed the transactions. Markets interpreted this as a sign of liquidity depletion, triggering panic among users.
Historical Hack and Lack of Transparency
This is not AscendEX's first crisis. In 2021, the platform was hacked by the North Korean Lazarus group, resulting in a loss of approximately $78 million. Crucially, since then, AscendEX has failed to publish proof of reserves (PoR) or undergo third-party security audits, leaving it far less transparent than major exchanges. The latest events cast further doubt on the security of user assets on smaller platforms.
The Wider Predicament of Small Exchanges
This incident reflects a broader trend: as regulatory pressures intensify (e.g., MiCA, U.S. enforcement actions) and the industry consolidates around giants like Binance and Coinbase, small and medium exchanges face shrinking operating margins. Lacking compliance backing, technical robustness, and user trust, they are vulnerable to liquidity crises during market volatility. Investors are advised to scrutinize exchanges' reserve status and audit history carefully.
