On April 30, 2016, a novel peer-to-peer Bitcoin lending platform called Credible Friends officially launched, aiming to spread Bitcoin awareness by enabling friends to borrow and lend virtual currency on mutually agreed terms. Developed by Gavin Knight and Zach Doty, the platform takes a fundamentally different approach from existing lending services like BTCJam — it is not designed for anonymous loans but rather for leveraging existing real-world trust relationships.

A Bank Among Friends

Credible Friends allows users to set up a Bitcoin wallet and then extend lines of credit exclusively to trusted friends through invitations and social media. Unlike traditional financial institutions, there is no escrow feature or formal financial protection. “It’s about the relationship and the trust, not a credit score,” Knight explained to Bitcoin.com. “We want to leverage trust between friends in order to spread the amazing capabilities of Bitcoin.”

The credit lines come with a flat interest rate of 25% APR, a portion of which is paid to the lender once the borrower repays in full. The credibility of each borrower — and the amount they can borrow — is determined by a reputation feedback system similar to that used on platforms like Localbitcoins. Terms such as loan duration and amount are entirely decided by the two parties involved. Borrowers can even repay outside the platform, for instance in person or through other arrangements.

Targeting Underserved Markets

The developers specifically designed Credible Friends to serve markets where traditional loans are difficult or impossible to secure, and where third-party trust is lacking. “We encourage people to do business with those they know, and utilize their past use of the system, and trust between parties,” Knight said. The platform aims to be a comprehensive gateway for Bitcoin, enabling users to receive, hold, use, and transact in the cryptocurrency without multiple steps. By focusing on friend circles, the platform minimizes fraud risks associated with fake profiles or IDs, as user groups are isolated and not open to the public.

Security and Fund Protection

In an interview ahead of the launch, Gavin Knight addressed security concerns. All user funds are stored in cold storage with distributed keys, meaning the platform itself cannot access them. The hot wallet is initially funded by the company’s own Bitcoin holdings. “Our focus is to keep customer funds safe at all times, and take on the risk ourselves as a company,” Knight stated. The company plans to adjust this model as the platform scales. Users do not require prior knowledge of 2FA or other security measures to open an account, but the system is designed to be intuitive and safe out of the box.

Excerpts from Developer Interview

Bitcoin.com asked Knight about the lack of escrow. He replied: “No as it’s revolving credit, and no loan service can really add an escrow feature because the funds are taken. This is the nature of lending, funds are spendable, and once taken it is between the two parties.” Regarding multi-country regulation and fraud prevention, Knight noted that Facebook and Twitter are global (except China) and that friend-isolated groups inherently filter most risks. He advised users to transact only with those they can verify personally.

Credible Friends introduces a unique social layer to Bitcoin lending. By banking on friendship rather than credit scores, the platform could become a powerful tool for onboarding new users in communities where trust is already established. Whether this “friends-as-bank” model gains traction remains to be seen, but it certainly offers a refreshing alternative to impersonal financial systems.
