Activation Timeline & Prerequisites
Jon Roethke, Base's senior developer advocate, announced via X that the B20 token standard is scheduled to activate on the Base mainnet at 02:00 UTC on June 27, 2026. The activation will follow the completion of the Base Beryl upgrade, after which the activation registry may take up to approximately one hour to become fully operational. Therefore, the actual effective time might see a slight delay.
Core Features of B20 Standard
B20 is a new native token standard introduced as part of the Base Beryl upgrade, fully compatible with the ERC-20 interface specification. Its design is specifically tailored for three asset categories: stablecoins (e.g., wrapped USDC, USDT), real-world assets (RWA, e.g., tokenized real estate and bonds), and staking-related assets (e.g., staking receipts, liquidity tokens). By providing a unified interface, B20 aims to lower the technical barrier for issuers while enhancing interoperability across protocols and platforms.
Implications for Base Ecosystem
Base already hosts numerous ERC-20-based tokens; the introduction of B20 does not replace existing standards but offers a more targeted and potentially more efficient alternative. For stablecoin issuers and RWA projects, B20 may deliver lower gas consumption or more flexible metadata extension capabilities (specific technical details pending verification after mainnet activation). In the near term, this standard could attract more traditional assets on-chain and bolster Base's positioning in regulated and real-world asset use cases.
