Cryptocurrency exchange Bitforex announced on July 19, 2024, that it will reopen withdrawal functions for users, ending a months-long freeze that began on February 23 when the platform became inaccessible. However, all trading features will remain suspended, and the platform will cease all services and products as it undergoes ‘comprehensive rectification.’ The announcement comes after the team revealed that its members were detained by police in Jiangsu Province, China.
Background: Sudden Freeze and $56.5 Million Hot Wallet Outflow
In late February 2024, Bitforex abruptly halted withdrawals just days after approximately $56.5 million in digital assets were moved from the exchange’s hot wallets. At the time, no official explanation was provided, leading to widespread speculation on social media about an insider job or hack. The silence lasted for months, leaving thousands of users unable to access their funds.
On July 19, the Bitforex team broke the silence via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that on February 23, 2024, “the Bitforex team was detained and investigated by the Jiangsu Province police in China. This unexpected event caused the platform to become inaccessible, and users were unable to withdraw assets on that day. Due to the sensitive nature of the situation, we were unable to provide timely notifications to our users.”
Withdrawal Process and Restrictions
The exchange said withdrawals will be directed to designated personal or external third-party wallets. Users holding perpetual contract positions must provide know-your-customer (KYC) documents, such as passports, to enable withdrawals. Notably, all trading functions will remain suspended, and no new user registrations will be permitted during this period. The platform will also cease all types of services and products as part of a “comprehensive rectification.”
The team stated that after engaging with law enforcement, Bitforex has received the green light to reopen withdrawals. However, no timeline for the rectification process or the return of full services has been provided, leaving the platform’s future uncertain.
Scam Warning and User Guidance
Simultaneously, Bitforex issued a scam alert, warning users to be wary of fraudsters posing as Bitforex support staff. The team urged users to only use official channels for any communication and never share private keys or sensitive information with third parties claiming to assist with withdrawals.
Industry Implications
The Bitforex incident underscores the inherent risks of centralized exchanges, particularly those with opaque operations and regulatory exposure. The detention of team members by Chinese authorities—a country that has banned cryptocurrency trading—highlights compliance challenges. For the broader crypto community, this serves as a reminder to prioritize self-custody and diversification of holdings across trusted platforms. While the reopening of withdrawals offers some relief to affected users, the exchange’s future remains in doubt.
As of press time, Bitforex has not disclosed the current status of its detained members or whether it will resume operations after rectification. The incident adds to the growing list of exchange failures that have shaken user confidence in centralized finance.
