BitGo, the Palo Alto-based bitcoin wallet and security company, has quietly introduced a dynamic fraud filtering service within its wallet earlier this year. According to BitGo co-founder and CEO Mike Belshe, the system has already saved one customer over $10,000 USD (more than 18 BTC) by blocking fraudulent transactions.

Multisignature Security at the Core

BitGo is among the first wallet providers to market with a multisignature (multisig) approach. Unlike most bitcoin wallets that rely on a single private key — making them vulnerable if that key is stolen — BitGo uses a 2-of-3 multisig model. The user holds three keys, but at least two are required to authorize a transaction. BitGo itself holds one key, which is stored offline as a backup. When a transaction request is made, BitGo co-signs it only if it meets user-defined criteria, adding an extra layer of security against theft and malware.

Fighting Clipboard Hijacking Malware

A growing threat to bitcoin users is clipboard hijacking malware. In February, Symantec discovered a new strain called Trojan.Coinbitclip, which monitors a victim's clipboard for copied bitcoin addresses and silently replaces them with the attacker's address. Belshe explained that BitGo's dynamic fraud filtering service is designed to detect such behavior. When a transaction matches suspicious patterns — such as a sudden change in recipient address — BitGo refuses to co-sign and instead returns an error message to the user.

The fraud checks are applied not only to the wallet interface but also to the BitGo API, enabling enterprise clients to benefit from the same protection. Previously, the only reliable defense against this kind of attack was using a hardware wallet, which keeps private keys offline. BitGo's software-based solution offers a more convenient alternative without sacrificing security.
