Block, the fintech company associated with Jack Dorsey, has joined OpenAI and Anthropic to launch the Agentic AI Foundation, a new initiative focused on open-source projects for agentic AI. The term generally refers to autonomous systems that can make decisions and carry out tasks with little or no direct human intervention.
A joint push for open-source agentic AI
According to the announcement, the foundation is designed to accelerate the safe and interoperable development of agentic AI. Each company is contributing a specific technology stack: Block will provide a new framework called goose, Anthropic will contribute its Model Context Protocol (MCP), and OpenAI will add Agents.MD, a tool used by coding agents.
Block said agentic AI should be open, accessible, and community-driven, arguing that open collaboration has repeatedly produced better outcomes than isolated competition.
An unusual coalition draws attention
The partnership has attracted notice because the three companies do not share the same reputation on openness. Block has long-standing ties to Bitcoin and the open-source community, while OpenAI and Anthropic are better known for influential but closed flagship models. The report notes that Anthropic’s Claude is closed-source, although the company supports the open MCP project. OpenAI, despite its name, also keeps ChatGPT closed-source and has evolved from a nonprofit structure into a profit-oriented corporate setup over time.

Real-world use cases already exist
The report points to self-driving technology as one of the best-known examples of agentic AI, citing Tesla’s full self-driving systems. Other practical applications include fraud detection and prevention in payments, as well as customer support platforms that can resolve issues without human involvement.
