Charles Hoskinson, the founder of Cardano and co-founder of Ethereum, has made a bold prediction for Bitcoin (BTC), stating that the top cryptocurrency could surge to between $250,000 and $500,000 per coin within the next 12 to 24 months. During a livestream earlier this week, Hoskinson compared Bitcoin to gold, calling it "the store of value for the Internet."

Bitcoin as the Digital Gold Standard

“As good as Ethereum can be, Solana can be and Cardano can be, let’s be intellectually honest about this: governments are talking about a strategic reserve for Bitcoin and Bitcoin alone,” Hoskinson told attendees. “It’s their entry point. Perhaps in five, ten, and fifteen years, that dialogue or narrative will change, but it is my belief that Bitcoin is going to go to a quarter of a million to half million dollars within the next 12 to 24 months.”

He attributed this trajectory to massive investment inflows and the unprecedented global interest in Bitcoin. “Because of the investment inflows and the great interest that has been achieved, this will translate to an ecosystem whose value is starting to approach that of gold,” he explained. Gold has served as a store of value for over 5,000 years, and Hoskinson sees Bitcoin following the same path in the digital age.

Cardano's Role in the Bitcoin Ecosystem

While Hoskinson is best known for leading Cardano’s development, he remains a staunch advocate for Bitcoin. He emphasized that Bitcoin now has a DeFi layer, which he believes will further solidify its position as the internet’s premier store of value. His vision is to ensure Cardano acts as a “spiritual successor” that remains relevant in this evolving narrative. “My work is creating the ideal platform for applications that can operate seamlessly in both Bitcoin mode and Cardano mode,” he stated.

Hoskinson’s commitment to innovation extends to Bitcoin-focused DeFi projects, which his team is actively exploring. He believes that as Bitcoin’s value proposition aligns more closely with traditional stores of value, its trajectory will redefine global perceptions of digital assets. The convergence of institutional adoption, strategic reserve discussions, and technological advancements in the Bitcoin ecosystem could accelerate this transformation.

Market Implications

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $100,000. A rise to $500,000 would push its market capitalization beyond $5 trillion—approaching a significant portion of gold’s estimated $12 trillion market cap. While Hoskinson’s prediction is ambitious, it aligns with growing narratives of Bitcoin as a geopolitical asset and a hedge against fiat currency debasement. The next 12 to 24 months will be critical as the world watches whether Bitcoin can indeed become the gold of the internet.
