Mnemonic clue and wallet file unlocked the funds

Cprkrn had also written down a sentence containing a mnemonic clue, described in the report as a master-key style element for crypto wallets. Claude paired that clue with data from the wallet.dat file, which led to the successful recovery of the password and restored access to the funds.

“It found an old wallet file and using the mnemonic, we finally cracked it. I was locked out for 11 years because of confusion and changing the password. In the end, the problem was solved in the simplest way possible.”

Screenshots shared by Cprkrn showed Claude working through command-line steps, analyzing BTCRecover’s algorithm and attempting decryption with a “sharedKey + password” combination. The terminal then displayed messages including “PRIVATE KEYS DECRYPTED! Let me convert to WIF format and verify addresses,” followed by “WE GOT IT!!! THE 5 BTC IS YOURS!” The result was that the wallet’s private keys were successfully decrypted and the coins became accessible again.

Experts say Bitcoin encryption was not broken

The story spread quickly on social media, where some users framed it as Claude AI breaking Bitcoin’s encryption. The report says a recovery expert pushed back on that claim. According to that explanation, Claude did not bypass Bitcoin’s cryptographic protections; it analyzed available files and clues to find a workable recovery path.

A Reddit thread on the incident drew thousands of comments. Some focused on the irony that years of brute-force attempts were beaten by a forgotten file.
