He still retained an older mnemonic-like phrase, but it no longer opened the current wallet file. That mismatch became one of the key clues in understanding why earlier recovery attempts failed.

Over the years, he said he spent about $250 on professional recovery attempts and also tried what he described as an enormous number of password guesses, ultimately without success. Bug found in btcrecover decryption logic

The technical turning point came from Claude’s reported diagnosis of an issue involving btcrecover, a widely used open-source bitcoin wallet recovery utility. According to the account posted on X, the tool was concatenating a shared key with the password in the wrong order during the decryption process. That error prevented successful recovery even when the necessary information was otherwise available.

Claude allegedly identified the bug, corrected the decryption logic, and then ran the fixed process to extract the wallet’s private keys in Wallet Import Format (WIF). Those recovered private keys were then matched against the target wallet address, providing confirmation that the process had succeeded.

Why the case matters

The story resonated because it illustrates a narrower but potentially valuable role for AI in digital asset recovery. Based on the information shared publicly, Claude did not bypass encryption through raw compute power or crack a wallet with no user data. Rather, it appears to have been used to parse unstructured personal archives, understand the behavior of legacy wallet software, identify an implementation issue in an existing recovery tool, and help execute a corrected workflow.

That distinction is important. For bitcoin users with old wallets, the biggest obstacle is often not just password loss, but fragmented records: outdated backups, mislabeled files, incompatible wallet versions, forgotten software behavior, or partial credentials that no longer line up with the newest wallet file.
