Coinbase has disclosed via its official X account that the first-ever mortgage guaranteed by Fannie Mae and collateralized by bitcoin has been successfully issued. The landmark loan was originated and is being serviced by digital mortgage platform Better, with Coinbase providing the core technical infrastructure for the transaction.

Fannie Mae is a U.S. government-sponsored enterprise that has long provided liquidity and guarantees to the residential mortgage market. This marks the first time Fannie Mae has guaranteed a loan backed by a cryptocurrency asset, signaling growing acceptance of digital assets as collateral by a government-affiliated institution.

According to Coinbase, the mortgage product is scheduled to be extended to borrowers nationwide this summer. The offering allows bitcoin holders to access home financing directly by pledging their digital assets as collateral, without the need to sell their bitcoin holdings—thereby giving crypto investors greater flexibility in managing their capital.

By embedding crypto assets into a traditional credit and mortgage framework, Coinbase is demonstrating a viable path to connect blockchain-based assets with real-world real estate finance, further advancing the integration of digital assets into everyday financial life.
