Coinbase officially launched Agentic Wallets on July 11 — a crypto wallet infrastructure designed exclusively for AI agents. For years, AI agents could recommend a transaction but couldn't execute it; every API call payment or on-chain trade required human approval. Agentic Wallets solves this last-mile problem: enabling agents to spend, earn, and trade autonomously.

Five Core Modules

Agentic Wallets includes five modules: Authenticate, Fund, Send, Trade, and Earn. It's built on two key Coinbase infrastructures — the AgentKit open-source toolkit and the x402 protocol, named after HTTP status code 402 and designed for machine-to-machine payments. The x402 protocol has already processed over 50 million transactions.

Developers can assemble these components to give AI agents full on-chain financial capabilities — spending, earning, and trading without human intervention.

Safety Rails: Let AI Spend, But Set Limits

Security is a top concern. Agentic Wallets includes multi-layered safety controls: users can set per-session spending caps, per-transaction limits, and custom authorization parameters. For example, an agent could be authorized to spend "no more than $1 per transaction, $10 total per task," similar to corporate credit card limits.

Stripe Joins, Expanding the x402 Ecosystem

Payment giant Stripe's product manager Jeff Weinstein also announced support for USDC payments on Base via the x402 protocol. Coinbase and Cloudflare established the x402 Foundation in late 2025, positioning it as the payment protocol for agent commerce. Stripe's entry connects this pipeline to the world's largest online payment distribution network.

From 'Tokenize Everything' to 'Agentize Everything'

Past crypto narratives focused on tokenizing real-world assets for liquidity. Agentic Wallets ushers in a new story: 'agentize everything'. Stablecoins become the working currency for AI agents, smart contracts the business logic layer. McKinsey estimates over 1 billion active AI agents globally by 2028. Each agent needs a wallet to conduct economic activities, expanding stablecoin use from cross-border remittances to the entire AI economy's medium of exchange.

Infrastructure Ready, Application Layer Still Evolving

For now, most AI agent economic actions remain simple — API calls, cloud resource purchases. Complex autonomous financial decisions like arbitrage or DeFi yield farming require more sophisticated risk controls and regulatory clarity. Agentic Wallets solves the 'can it?' question; 'should it?' and 'how to regulate?' remain open. Who is liable when an agent's autonomous trade goes wrong? Who bears loss from a malicious prompt injection? These need legal and regulatory answers.

The direction is irreversible. Coinbase, Stripe, and Cloudflare have densely deployed AI agent payment infrastructure within three months — a bet on the next decade.
