Coinbase has introduced Agentic Wallets, a wallet product built specifically for artificial intelligence agents. The launch gives AI systems the ability to manage funds and execute blockchain transactions without waiting for a human to approve each action. According to Coinbase’s Developer Platform blog, the wallets let agents hold assets, trade tokens, pay fees, and earn yield on-chain.
The product targets a clear limitation in current AI systems. They can answer questions and recommend actions, but they usually cannot carry out financial moves on their own. Agentic Wallets are designed to change that. Instead of stopping at analysis, an AI agent can move into execution and interact directly with crypto infrastructure.
x402 protocol powers machine-to-machine payments
At the center of the system is the x402 protocol, which Coinbase describes as a payments standard that allows machines to send and receive value programmatically. The source material says the protocol has already processed more than 50 million transactions. Using Coinbase’s command-line tools, developers can create and fund Agentic Wallets in minutes, then rely on built-in functions for sending funds, trading, and earning rather than writing complex blockchain logic from scratch.
That matters for both speed and usability. Developers get a shorter path to deployment, while AI agents get a practical way to fold payments, trading, and yield strategies into automated workflows.
Gasless trading on Base reduces operational friction
The wallets also support gasless trading on Base, Coinbase’s Layer-2 network. This addresses a practical issue in autonomous execution: an agent can stall if it runs out of network fees while operating on its own. Gasless support is meant to keep activity moving even when an agent is not actively supervised by a person.
The source outlines several possible use cases. With autonomous wallets in place, AI agents could monitor DeFi yields, rebalance portfolios around the clock, pay for APIs or compute power directly, and take part in digital economies using their own transaction flow. Each use case depends on the same shift: the agent can control value, not just recommend what should happen next.
Autonomy comes with limits and compliance checks
Coinbase says the product is not built around unrestricted access. Agentic Wallets include programmable guardrails, allowing users to set session caps and transaction limits that define how much an agent can spend. Private keys remain protected inside Coinbase’s secure infrastructure, and built-in compliance tools screen for high-risk actions.
Coinbase frames the launch as a step toward AI systems acting inside financial networks rather than serving only as advisers. Agentic Wallets package that capability into a wallet layer while pairing autonomy with spending controls, key protection, and compliance screening.
