The peer-to-peer Bitcoin lending platform Credible Friends officially launched this week, aiming to spread Bitcoin adoption through social trust. Created by developers Gavin Knight and Zach Doty, the platform eliminates traditional credit scoring and relies on real-world relationships for lending.
How It Works: Trust as Collateral
Unlike existing Bitcoin lending services such as BTCJam, Credible Friends is designed not for anonymous borrowers but for friends to extend lines of credit to each other via invites and social media. Users set up a Bitcoin wallet, receive credit from trusted contacts, and spend the funds anywhere Bitcoin is accepted. Lenders earn 25% APR on the principal once the borrower repays in full. Borrower reputation is determined by a feedback system similar to that of LocalBitcoins. Terms such as amount and duration are negotiated between the two parties, and repayment can occur outside the platform—even in cash.
Interview: Security and Vision
In a pre-launch interview with Bitcoin.com, Knight addressed concerns about the lack of escrow: “Revolving credit cannot have escrow because funds are taken. We encourage people to do business with those they know and utilize past usage and trust.” Regarding fraud prevention across jurisdictions, Knight noted that Facebook and Twitter verification helps isolate risk among friend groups, making the system inherently less vulnerable to scams. “It’s advised to do business with users with existing standing that you can verify yourselves,” he added.
On fund security, Knight revealed that all user funds are stored in cold storage with distributed keys, and the hot wallet is funded directly by company Bitcoin holdings. “Our focus is to keep customer funds safe at all times,” he emphasized.
Credible Friends represents a novel approach to peer-to-peer lending, particularly suited to markets where traditional loans are difficult to obtain and third-party trust is scarce. As decentralized finance continues to evolve, trust-based lending models may play an increasingly important role in expanding Bitcoin’s utility.
