The core thesis is that permissionless infrastructure will eventually overpower closed systems.

To illustrate the current fragmentation in the blockchain space, the article cites three key examples: Stripe wants everything to happen on Tempo, JP Morgan wants everything to happen on JP Morgan Chain, and Circle wants everything to happen on Arc. Each of these major players is building their own proprietary network — essentially a permissioned infrastructure. In contrast, Ethereum operates as a permissionless public blockchain, allowing anyone to participate and build without authorization, closely mirroring the open-source model that made Linux a success in the operating system space.
Etherealize emphasizes that history repeatedly shows open systems defeating closed ecosystems. Linux defeated proprietary Unix through its open-source model, becoming the backbone of servers and cloud infrastructure. Ethereum follows the same logic: by providing a decentralized, permissionless smart contract platform, it attracts developers to innovate freely, eventually generating powerful network effects. Despite the proliferation of specialized chains and consortium chains (such as Stripe's Tempo, JP Morgan's JP Morgan Chain, and Circle's Arc), these closed systems will struggle to compete with the long-term resilience of an open ecosystem.

The Ethereum community widely shared and discussed the analogy, with many believing that Ethereum is solidifying its position as the smart contract layer and has the potential to become the "Linux of blockchain."
Notably, Stripe, JP Morgan, and Circle are all major players in traditional finance or payments, each launching their own on-chain solutions. This demonstrates that traditional institutions recognize the value of blockchain technology, yet they attempt to retain control through permissioned chains. Etherealize's argument serves as a reminder to the market that true decentralization and permissionless access are the core values of blockchain technology.
