In a recent podcast interview, Hugo Philion, co-founder of Flare and CEO of Flare Labs, laid out the blockchain’s ambitious mission: build a complete end-to-end decentralized finance ecosystem around XRP, and eventually migrate all real-world assets (RWAs) onto the blockchain. He argues that superior technologies like DeFi will inevitably replace the intermediary-heavy traditional financial system.
Flare: Unlocking XRP's DeFi Potential
Flare is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain that uses built-in data protocols to power bridges and DeFi applications. Its primary goal is to unlock the potential of XRP—the world’s third-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, which remains largely underutilized. Through Flare, XRP holders can participate in lending, borrowing, decentralized exchange trading, create decentralized stablecoins, and even open collateralized option strategies—all using their XRP directly. Philion emphasized that currently about 60–70% of XRP sits on exchanges, making institutional-grade products the key to market expansion.
Smart Accounts: A Game-Changer for FXRP Growth
To make the ecosystem accessible to all XRP holders, Flare recently launched a game-changing feature called Flare Smart Accounts. This innovative abstraction technology allows ordinary users to control Flare transactions—such as minting FXRP and depositing into vaults—directly from the XRP Ledger, without needing to buy Flare’s native FLR token or download a new wallet. The impact has been immediate: FXRP, Flare’s bridged version of XRP, grew by 31% in just 10 days after the smart account launch, reaching approximately 133 million FXRP.
Flare 2.0: Privacy for Institutional RWA Adoption
Addressing a major barrier for institutional adoption of off-chain RWAs—transaction privacy—Flare is preparing the much-anticipated Flare 2.0 upgrade. It will introduce a new compute layer designed to allow applications to run off-chain with full privacy while settling securely on-chain. This powerful privacy-preserving compute layer positions Flare as a central hub for RWAs, enabling complex applications like DEXs and lending protocols for assets issued on Flare or connected chains like XRP Ledger. Philion asserts that the migration of all traditional real-world assets—including stocks, bonds, and derivatives—to blockchain is inevitable. The current priority is maximizing XRP utility and liquidity, which will then drive the integration of other major tokens like Bitcoin into the Flare DeFi ecosystem.
