Bitcoin hardware and software company General Bytes has introduced an NFC-based bitcoin wallet card designed to make crypto payments more seamless at the point of sale. The company’s goal is ambitious but clear: move beyond the long-standing QR code model and offer a tap-or-swipe payment experience that feels more natural for everyday users.
The new product is tied to General Bytes’ ATM infrastructure and can be issued directly through the company’s BATMThree XXL+ machine. Once purchased through the machine interface, the card is created and the bitcoin keys are written onto the NFC chip during the issuance process. The result is a physical wallet card that can be used with compatible POS terminals for bitcoin transactions.
From Bitcoin ATMs to Contactless Wallet Cards
Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Prague, General Bytes is known for selling bitcoin ATMs and other blockchain-based devices. According to the company, it was the first in the sector to integrate NFC technology into its hardware. With the new wallet card initiative, it is extending that work into a consumer-facing payment format that aims to reduce friction during transactions.
Martijn Wismeijer, the company’s marketing manager, said QR codes are gradually being overtaken by technologies such as Bluetooth and NFC tags. In his view, the NFC wallet card system offers a simpler user experience for bitcoin payments by cutting down on the need to unlock a phone, open an app, and scan a code before confirming a transaction.
The concept was inspired in part by the biohacking community, where NFC-based bitcoin wallet implants had already attracted attention. General Bytes acknowledged that implants are far too niche for mainstream users, but saw wallet cards as a practical alternative that preserves the contactless experience while making it accessible to a wider audience.
How the System Works
To build the product, General Bytes implemented technical architecture including WIF (Wallet Import Format), allowing bitcoin keys to be stored on the card’s NFC chip. The company said the cards have been tested with the CortexPay POS terminal, which launched in 2015 and has seen use among visitors to Paralelni Polis in Prague. Based on that testing, General Bytes describes the setup as reliable and ready for practical use.
Under the company’s model, NFC chip cards are not pre-programmed before purchase. Instead, programming occurs only after the end user completes the transaction at the ATM. This process is designed to ensure the wallet credentials are generated and written at the moment of sale rather than during manufacturing.
General Bytes said the standard cards are black, but they can also be produced in full color. For ATM operators, the company offers the possibility of branded cards, and those cards can also be pre-loaded depending on the operator’s setup. That creates a potential use case not only for payments, but also for promotional, retail, or venue-specific crypto products.
A Push to Reduce Dependence on Mobile Phones
The company believes one of the strongest advantages of the NFC wallet card is that it removes the inconvenience of relying on a smartphone for every crypto payment. In the existing QR-based model, users often need to launch a wallet app, scan a code, verify the amount, and complete a transfer manually. By contrast, a contactless card can make the experience feel closer to established retail payment behavior.
General Bytes argues that this makes the cards especially suitable for everyday payments, petty cash, and even basic value storage. If the card is not being used at a POS terminal, the company says it can also function as a kind of physical savings tool. That framing positions the product not only as a payment mechanism, but as a bridge between digital assets and tangible user-controlled storage.
Wismeijer made the company’s broader vision explicit, saying that eliminating QR codes from crypto could remove what he described as a relic from the past, while also reducing the need for mobile phones in many cryptocurrency applications. He framed the transition as a win-win: simpler payments for users and a more intuitive path toward wider bitcoin adoption.
Open-Source Strategy and Industry Implications
General Bytes noted that the BATMThree XXL+ model is already available for operators interested in running a bitcoin ATM with this functionality. The company also said its hardware and software are open source on GitHub, a decision that may help developers, operators, and the broader bitcoin community evaluate or expand on the approach.
The launch reflects a recurring challenge in crypto payments: technological capability alone is not enough if the user experience remains cumbersome. QR codes have played an important role in making wallet-based transfers possible across devices and merchants, but they are often less convenient in physical retail settings than contactless systems. General Bytes is betting that familiar payment behavior—tap, swipe, and go—could make bitcoin transactions easier to understand and more appealing to non-technical users.
That said, whether NFC wallet cards can truly displace QR codes will depend on more than just the card itself. Merchant terminal compatibility, operator adoption, user trust, and the broader acceptance of bitcoin for everyday commerce will all influence the outcome. Still, the product signals a concrete attempt to rethink how crypto payments should look in the real world.
For now, General Bytes is positioning the NFC wallet card as a practical next step in bitcoin usability: a physical, contactless instrument that aims to make digital currency spending feel less experimental and more like a standard consumer payment experience.
