Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission is studying a plan to extend securities trading hours, with the derivatives market expected to be the first area where the change is introduced. Speaking on Oct. 9 at an ASIFMA conference, SFC Chief Executive Julia Leung said Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing will publish a discussion paper in the fourth quarter on extending trading hours for the cash market. She also said Hong Kong will move to a T+1 settlement cycle, with HKEX set to release a consultation conclusion in the near term. Leung disclosed that the first phase of a tick-size reduction measure launched a year ago covered 300 stocks, narrowing bid-ask spreads by 38% and cutting trade execution time by 26%. Preliminary results from the second phase showed spreads narrowed by about 30%. She added that longer trading hours would be supported by measures including tokenized money and e-HKD settlement.
