Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin has officially ceased operations following a devastating hack that saw the loss of 4,502.9 Bitcoin (approx. $303 million) in May 2024. The exchange announced on December 2 that all user assets will be transferred to SBI VC Trade Co., a subsidiary of SBI Holdings, with the transfer expected to be completed by March 2025.
Hack and Asset Transfer Plan
The breach on May 31, 2024, ranked among the largest single-entity losses in the crypto industry for 2024, according to blockchain security platform Immunefi. In response, DMM Bitcoin pledged to raise approximately $320 million (50 billion yen) to reimburse affected users and imposed restrictions on withdrawals and new spot purchases. However, after months of evaluation, the exchange determined that prolonged restrictions would severely inconvenience customers, leading to the decision to wind down operations entirely.
Transition Details
SBI VC Trade stated it will begin handling the 14 spot cryptocurrency trading pairs currently offered by DMM Bitcoin before the official asset transfer, ensuring seamless service. The two firms are negotiating the exact transfer date and methodology, promising to announce further details promptly. DMM Bitcoin confirmed it will continue investigating the hack in cooperation with law enforcement, and once the asset migration is complete, the exchange will fully shut down.
Industry Implications
The incident underscores persistent security vulnerabilities in centralized exchanges. DMM Bitcoin, part of the diversified DMM Group (active in e-commerce and entertainment), saw its crypto venture collapse, potentially discouraging other traditional conglomerates from entering the space. The asset migration to SBI VC Trade, a regulated platform under Japan's Financial Services Agency, may accelerate consolidation in the Japanese crypto market, favoring larger, compliant players. Users await detailed fee and feature information from SBI, while analysts highlight the growing importance of multi-signature wallets and cold storage solutions in preventing future breaches.
