Mastercard on July 23 officially launched Agent Pay for Machines (AP4M), a new service designed for machine-to-machine (M2M) payments driven by artificial intelligence. The infrastructure supports stablecoin settlement and handles micropayments under one cent. According to the press release, more than 30 industry giants including OKX, Coinbase, Stripe, and Aave Labs have joined as initial backers.
Four Core Capabilities for AI Agent Payments
Built on Mastercard's 2025 Agent Pay initiative, AP4M addresses high-frequency, low-latency payment challenges. Its key capabilities include credentialing with verifiable intent for trusted AI agent identities; permissioning to set authorization rules and spending limits via code; transacting for high-frequency automated cross-provider transactions; and settling across credit cards, bank accounts, and stablecoins. The shift moves digital commerce from human-initiated to machine-executed around the clock.
Use Cases: From Automated E-commerce to Logistics
Mastercard envisions AI agents autonomously building websites (buying domains, hosting, image generation) or logistics agents paying shipping, dock, and cold-chain data fees automatically. Product chief Jorn Lambert said the service will “create a great boom in AI business models.”
30+ Partners Across TradFi and Web3
AP4M is not a solo effort. The initial partner list includes payment giants Adyen, Stripe, Checkout.com, crypto exchanges Coinbase and OKX, DeFi protocol Aave Labs, payment provider MoonPay, and blockchain networks Polygon and Solana Foundation. Aave Labs founder Stani Kulechov stressed integrating credit and liquidity at “machine speed,” while Coinbase executive Nina Coughlin highlighted open, interoperable stablecoin frameworks. Mastercard strengthens its traditional payment dominance while capturing next-generation AI and Web3 convergence.
