Michael Saylor, the pro-Bitcoin executive chairman of MicroStrategy (Nasdaq: MSTR), delivered a bold long-term forecast at the recent Bitcoin conference in Nashville, Tennessee: by the year 2045, Bitcoin's price could reach $3 million in a bear case, $13 million in a base case, and a staggering $49 million in a bull case.
Bitcoin as the Revolutionary Digital Capital
During his presentation, Saylor emphasized that Bitcoin is revolutionizing the global economy by replacing outdated 20th-century financial and physical assets with digital capital. He highlighted Bitcoin's durability, immunity to inflation, entropy, and other devaluation factors that plague traditional assets. Saylor advocates for individuals, corporations, and nations to adopt Bitcoin as a primary treasury asset, underscoring its potential for significant wealth accumulation and economic stability.
The Nasdaq-listed software firm has branded itself as the first Bitcoin development company. In June 2024, MicroStrategy disclosed that its Bitcoin holdings had grown to 226,331 BTC, valued at $8.33 billion at the time. This makes it the largest publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin globally.
Call for US Government to Hold Majority of World's Bitcoin
Saylor argued that the U.S. government should hold the majority of the world's Bitcoin to strengthen the U.S. dollar. He likened Bitcoin to a critical future asset similar to historic acquisitions of gold reserves and land ownership. "The future of the country lies in cyberspace, with Bitcoin being the 'cyber Manhattan,'" he stated. Drawing parallels to the U.S. government's significant gold reserves, he emphasized that Bitcoin should be treated as a strategic national asset.
Saylor's prediction is grounded in Bitcoin's fixed supply of 21 million coins and the accelerating global adoption. He believes that as sovereign states, institutions, and individuals increasingly recognize Bitcoin's superior properties as a store of value, its price will rise exponentially. Even the bear case of $3 million implies a more than 40-fold increase from current levels (around $67,000), while the bull case of $49 million would represent a staggering 730x return over 21 years.
The forecast sparked widespread debate: supporters applaud Saylor's visionary outlook and believe it will drive further mainstream acceptance; skeptics question the reliability of such long-term predictions and point to regulatory uncertainties and competition from other digital assets. Regardless of one's stance, Saylor's projection puts Bitcoin's long-term potential squarely in the spotlight once again.
