Microsoft has unveiled a strategic overhaul of 365 Copilot, aiming to integrate the open-source AI technology of OpenClaw and transform the product from a passive assistant into a more autonomous AI agent. The move highlights Microsoft’s broader effort to deepen office automation and reshape how humans and machines collaborate across enterprise software.
From responsive assistant to task-driven agent
The initiative is being led by Microsoft Corporate Vice President Omar Shahine. Its main objective is to give Copilot stronger system-level control and the ability to carry out persistent background processes. In practical terms, that could allow Copilot to do more than answer prompts: it may be able to autonomously handle tasks such as generating to-do lists in Outlook or syncing data within Excel.
This marks a notable shift in Copilot’s intended role. Rather than acting solely as an on-demand assistant, Microsoft is positioning it as a task-executing agent that can operate across applications. For enterprise users, such capabilities could reduce repetitive manual work and improve workflow coordination between productivity tools.
Microsoft accelerates its autonomous AI push
The report also says CEO Satya Nadella has made this transition a priority and reorganized executive reporting lines to speed up Microsoft’s move toward autonomous AI. That suggests the company sees Copilot’s evolution as more than a product update; it is part of a larger AI strategy.
As competition in generative AI continues to intensify, Microsoft’s latest Copilot revision appears focused not just on better content generation, but on embedding AI more deeply into day-to-day enterprise operations.
