Moonpay, a cryptocurrency payments service provider, has raised $555 million in its first financing round, reaching a valuation of $3.4 billion. The Series A round was led by Tiger Global Management and Coatue, with participation from Blossom Capital, Thrive Capital, Paradigm, and NEA.
John Curtius, partner at Tiger Global, stated: 'We spoke to many of the company’s customers during diligence who highlighted Moonpay’s compelling user experience and expressed conviction in the company’s market leadership.' The funds will be used to expand the team, add new features, and scale compliance and payment processing operations.
Core Business: A One-Stop Fiat-to-Crypto Ramp
Moonpay enables wallets and exchanges to offer fiat-to-crypto purchases by handling KYC/AML compliance, payment processing, crypto liquidity, fraud prevention, regulatory licenses, and custom checkout flows. By taking on these complexities, Moonpay allows clients to focus on their core business while providing a seamless user experience.
The company already supports hundreds of wallets and services, helping users buy cryptocurrencies via credit cards and bank transfers. Paradigm co-founder Matt Huang commented: 'Crypto is growing rapidly, but bringing aboard the next billion people requires services that make it even easier to access. MoonPay has built a simple and secure way for people globally to participate in this new economy.'
From First Round to Unicorn Status
Despite being bootstrapped prior to this round, Moonpay had already achieved meaningful revenue through its fiat ramp solutions. The massive Series A size ($555 million) underscores strong investor confidence in crypto payment infrastructure.
Looking ahead, Moonpay plans to pursue regulatory licenses in additional jurisdictions, enhance its developer tooling, and introduce more customizable checkout experiences. The company aims to maintain its lead in compliance efficiency and product design as the race to onboard the next billion users intensifies.
