AI research firm Nous Research has rolled out a one-click local model setup feature for its open-source agent Hermes Desktop. It checks the user's hardware setup on its own, picks a fitting model, downloads the model weights, and sets up the inference runtime environment. Much easier, frankly, for anyone trying to run open-source models locally.
Hermes Desktop is free under the MIT license and works on macOS 12+, Windows 10/11, and Linux. No account is needed to run local models. The built-in model directory checks compatibility against the user's exact hardware and shows feasibility with green, yellow, and red indicators. Simple visual cue. And it means the chosen model can run on that hardware with a context window of at least 64K.
