OpenAI said on July 21 that it has appointed two chief executives from publicly listed financial companies as independent directors on both its foundation and corporate boards: David Velez, founder and CEO of Brazilian digital bank Nubank, and Robin Vince, CEO of Bank of New York Mellon (BNY). With the two appointments, OpenAI’s board will expand from eight members to 10. The company also outlined the backgrounds of the new directors. Velez founded Nubank in 2013 and previously worked on Latin America investments at Sequoia Capital, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley. Vince spent 26 years at Goldman Sachs, where he served as chief risk officer and chief operating officer. OpenAI said it remains controlled by a nonprofit foundation that oversees a public-benefit company allowed to pursue profit. Most directors sit on both the foundation and company boards, while Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman is the only internal director.
