OpenAI has reportedly entered another internal “code red” moment. According to The Wall Street Journal, applications chief Fidji Simo used that phrase in an all-hands meeting to describe the company’s position as Anthropic gains ground with enterprise customers and software developers.
In an internal message, Simo said OpenAI had spread its efforts across too many apps and technology stacks and now needed to simplify. She described that fragmentation as a drag on speed and a barrier to meeting the quality standard the company wants. The message was blunt: too many parallel products are slowing execution.
A desktop super app is now the product focus
OpenAI’s plan is to combine three key products into a single desktop app: ChatGPT, coding platform Codex, and a browser project known as Atlas. Simo is set to lead the integration effort, with OpenAI president Greg Brockman helping coordinate the broader product overhaul.
The roadmap is expected to roll out in stages. Over the next few months, OpenAI plans to expand Codex with agent-style AI functions that go beyond pure coding tasks. After that, ChatGPT and the Atlas browser would be folded into the same desktop product. The mobile ChatGPT app is not part of this integration plan and will remain unchanged.
Setbacks from last year shaped the pivot
The reported shift follows a year in which OpenAI launched many standalone products without generating strong traction. The Wall Street Journal said senior leaders, including chief executive Sam Altman, chief research officer Mark Chen, and Simo, have been reassessing the company’s broader product lineup.
Anthropic’s gains with Claude Code and Cowork in enterprise and developer markets appear to be a central factor behind OpenAI’s renewed focus on business users. In the all-hands meeting, Simo told employees the company could no longer afford to be distracted by what she called “side quests” while a rival was moving quickly in its target markets.
