OpenAI is investing $250 million to figure out how artificial intelligence will reshape the global economy. On May 27, CEO Sam Altman announced the launch of the “Economic Futures in the Age of AI” initiative, funded by the OpenAI Foundation. The organization admits that traditional metrics like GDP are outdated and society must prepare for a future of falling labor income and extreme wealth concentration.
Three Pillars of the $250M Initiative
The funds will be deployed through grants, partnerships, and direct operations across three key areas.
Understanding the Shift. OpenAI argues that existing economic measurement tools are obsolete. The focus must shift from “which tasks AI can automate” to “where the value created flows”. If AI value becomes digital goods and labor's share shrinks, GDP no longer reflects well-being. The plan will build independent measurement and prediction infrastructure, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries.
Supporting the Transition. Traditional retraining programs are inadequate. OpenAI will fund broader transition strategies including improved unemployment insurance, wage loss protection, and experience transfer pathways. A key emphasis is giving workers agency over AI deployment. AI tools will also help marginalized groups access legal, medical, and financial services.
Building Long-term Economic Security. This is the most radical pillar. If automation concentrates economic gains, society needs new institutional designs. The team will test multiple models: on the revenue side, shifting taxes from labor to capital and economic rents, taxing excess profits, and establishing public sovereign wealth funds. On the distribution side, exploring universal basic income, basic services, or new data governance models. AI simulations will model how different policies evolve as capabilities grow.
Test and Correct Before Crisis Hits
OpenAI Foundation stresses it doesn't seek perfect solutions now, but wants to fund “testable, governable, and correctable” options. The $250 million is just a starting point; specific projects will be announced later this year, with open calls for global ideas. When an AI titan seriously debates taxing capital and redistributing wealth, it signals that AGI's disruption of the real economy is imminent.
